'Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the Laos,
Not a creature was stirring
(because here they're Buddhist).
The stockings (and underwear, rain jackets, etc.) were scattered all over the floor,
And Sarah hoped to God that St. Nick wouldn't snore
The travellers were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads
(actually this is a Lariam side-effect. Other symptoms include: nausea, vomiting, dizziness, light-headedness, loss of balance, headache, sleepiness, inability to sleep, abnormal dreams, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, abnormal heart beat, skin rash, hair loss, eyesight problems, muscle pain, convulsions and "disturbances of mood". If symptoms persist contact a doctor immediately)
And Sarah in her pigtails and Nick in his Hockey Hair
(Against which Sarah plotted with a bottle of Nair)
Had just settled in for a good night's sleep (which was rare)
When out on the road there arose such a clatter,
We sprang from the mosquito net to see what was the matter.
When what to our wondering eyes should appear,
An old woman hawked and spat from a bike in third gear
(it's a cultural thing).
Christmas morning we feasted on breakfast baguettes
And guessed at the success of the Weber/Melville family fetes.
All around us it's green- all bananas and palms
While monks in orange robes walk collecting their alms
French and Buddhist buildings sit side by side
Row upon row of Tuk-Tuks beckons us for a ride
(Kuang Si Waterfall Sir?)
It's a strange and wonderful Christmas here in Luang Prabang,
But we still can't wait for next year to enjoy it with our gang!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!
(can you believe we rhymed something with Luang Prabang?)
