Budapest
Buda on the left. Pest on the right. I have officially started my semester abroad in Budapest, Hungary. It is going wonderfully so far. I absolutely love it here. I am living in an apartment with two other girls: Jenny and Anna. They are super nice and easy to live with. Anna was actually born in Hungary and lived here until she was 6. She is still fluent in Hungarian and has family living in smaller cities in Hungary. They are both from California schools, as are all of the students in my program except for two other people from Wisconsin. In total, there are just over 30 of us. Of these 30 some, 5 are guys, so the ratio is a bit skewed. No worries though. It's a good group.
My apartment is great. It is right near the big city park. I have my own room. We have a beautiful little courtyard right outside our apartment, as is the case with most of the places around here. And I am finally figuring out the public transportation, so life is good.
Some of the highlights thus far: Wandering the streets of Budapest for hours. Seeing some of the sights here in town. Going to the
Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Seeing a DJ Tiesto concert in Debrecen, Hungary which was a crazy techno concert that lasted all night (i must say, europeans really do love their techno). Seeing a Hungarian boy band perform at our school. Getting lost. Going on a date with a Hungarian named Gergo. Dancing the nights away. Visiting a city called Pecs, which I am now in love with. Stumbling upon a reenactment of a Hungarian war. Stumbling upon traditional folk dancing and costumes from different countries another time. Loving my classes. Being continuously frustrated with how difficult it is to learn Hungarian. Yet also being amazed by how doable it is to not speak the local language and still manage to function fairly well. Buying alcohol and never being carded. Letting 2 guys passing through Budapest that went to Wisconsin crash on my couch for a weekend (small world!). Chopping off my hair. and on and on.
Plenty more to come. For now I just wanted to get one post up and try to post some pics as well.
