Day 6: Aveiro - Coimbra

This time round we did get up early enough to do something productive in the morning....early bird catch the worm?!?!

Taking the train to Aveiro was the original plan, but once in Aveiro we saw that there wasn't much for a show for us to see. Nevertheless did we spend a couple of hours there, because of it's famous pastry, Ovos Moles. This small....tiny piece of pastry is like a paper shell with some sugared egg yolk filling. It's quite heavy to eat...on that note our livers have been working overtime. To start there was the port wine the day before, then as breakfast we each ate three scrambled eggs with each a HUGE piece of bacon...and a half...
So as you can see we needed a well deserved liver-break!

After our culinary pastry stop we wandered through the town to see if there wasn't anything else to explore, but quickly decided to turn around and head back to the train station.

Coimbra here we come!

Coimbra is city build on a hilltop mainly occupied by students, faculty staff and a university. The university is one that can be compared with the old ones like Leuven, Gent, Oxford, Cambridge,... The whole city has been revolving around this institution for centuries.

Arriving in Coimbra we entered the nearby Tourist information stand to find a camping site because our tour guides didn't give us any in the close vicinity. Lady luck was on our side yet again...a camping site were building works were abandon a couple of years ago was actually completed! So a brand new camping site just outside of the city was our new temporary sleeping accommodation.

When you're a student in a student city what does one do? Exactly you go out and see the splendors of the night. After a looooooooonnnnnnnng walk into the city...hill up...hill down..we ended up in an erasmus bar, because all the students leave on friday only the erasmus exchange students remain here. Not a bad place to start the night, €3 for a vodka cola/bacardi sprite, but as nights are they eventually end. Looking around in the bar you quickly see the diffenences between foreign students and local ones, the locals basically smoke, have black hair and don't speak English and the foreign ones are all the opposite! And apparently the sign that we make to order a beer in Belgium is only used in Belgium. We saw some girls making it, so we approach them to figure out if they were portuguese...which they were not...because the were making the sign....pinky up! In Coimbra the nightlife stops at 4h when the security team literally kicks you out onto the curb!

Taking the taxi to the camping is great way to get to bed quickly.

Signing off with pinky up
