Australia always seemed so far away, so far down the line, that to actually arrive here is quite a suprise. Since I have not yet left the city, it still doesn't entirely seem like i am really in Australia. I haven't seen any bush or outback, and have so far had no encounters with creatures likely to kill me. So far.

I have been here getting on for two weeks now, staying in a suburb of Melbourne called Prahan, not far from the old school beach resort of St. Kilda. Melbourne is ok. I'm have never been the biggest fan of large cities, but as large cities go it isn't bad. It has an amazing arts scene, not that i have really taken advantage of it. In the city centre the ACMI (Aus. Institute for the Moving Picture) is more than any film fan could possibly dream of, having a crazy library of films, not to mention a truely lush cinema showing a suprising selection of films (I saw The Losts Boys, a true classic), and at the present time, also a huge exhibit on Stanley Kubrick, with over 2,000 items from his personal archive.

I have been staying

in a homey, if a little run down hostel called Lords Lodge. The people there are pretty nice, although they seem to take a while to warm up to strangers. I have done little since arriving, and i have to admit that i have watched more than a few films. I have occassonally ventured out, taking in the city zoo, the city museum, and generally exploring Melbourne.

The original plan was to stay here until Christmas, but now i am here it feels as if spending another 2 weeks in Melbourne would be a waste of time. So at the end of the week I will be heading off to Adelaide, and over christmas i will be joining a small tour travelling through the outback and up to Alice Springs (taking in Uluru and Kings Canyon near the end of the trip). Should be fun, if undoubtedly a little hot and sweaty.
