Well, mid-week already.
A nice sunny day
Baby Orphanage again...
Feeling some heartbreak.
It's fun playing with the kids at the Baby Orphanage and then helping with the feeding of the younger kids. BUT sometimes when you think about the whole situation it is a bit heartbreaking. I sometimes wonder how these kids will be in a few years time. Where will they go when they are too old for the Baby Orphanage. They really need more clothes since a lot of the clothes they wear have rips and tears in them. I was talking to one of the volunteers here and we were thinking that we should go out and buy them more clothes from the Markets here. We've also been told they need more baby formula.
Today we did the usual colouring. We cut out some of the Care Bears from the colouring book and had them colour them in. Some of them pasted theirs onto the already existing poster on the wall with Care Bears on it and others glued theirs to coloured card stock. A few of the boys were more interested in getting their coloured pencils sharpened rather than colour a Care Bear. A couple of the real young ones were more interested in eating the pencils! LOL I think that we should get more crayons so that no sharpening is necessary. We have since learned that felt markers are NOT a good choice. 😊
When they tired of the colouring we went outside. A bunch of them were having fun going onto what seemed like the "forbidden" field. They'd run out there and then run back giggling like they weren't supposed to be going out there. Some of the older boys were playing some game with their slippers. They were sort of throwing them like you would hockey cards against a wall. A couple of the older girls wanted to jump rope so I was with them. The older boys eventually joined in too. I started to count how many times they could jump without getting mixed up in the skipping rope. I think that Phuc got up to 12. Vi up to 9. She probably would have gone on longer but Tong decided to jump in and messed it all up.
Then it was the usual feeding. At one point I was sitting there waiting for the food to be ready to be served and there were seven kids sitting patiently in front of me. Then Claire came and I asked her, how do we know which ones to feed? In the end I fed two girls whom I don't know the names but were pretty good eaters. Before I knew it almost 2 hours had passed and we were headed back to our guesthouse for lunch.
This weekend a bunch of us plan on going up to Hoi An. I'm thinking of getting some clothes made and perhaps a pair of shoes too! You know how I like me the shoes! LOL Guess I should wait and see what there is and the prices before I get my heart set on making a pair. 😊 There are some volunteers from the other programs that are going up to Hue but from Tam Ky it would be at least 6 or 7 hours one way. Too far for a weekend trip. Perhaps I'll check out Hue on the way up to Hanoi. Or if I don't go at all that is okay with me too. Can't see everything, right?
I don't have much planned for the rest of this afternoon other than planning on buying a gift of some sort to bring to dinner. Claire and I have been invited to dinner tonight. I met Lanh at the Vocational Training Centre last week. I saw her again yesterday and we were speaking for quite a bit (when I really should have been playing with the kids!) Lanh and Dieu (and her twin Hien) took us for coffee near our house yesterday afternoon. They are all very keen on improving their English. Lanh actually knows quite a bit of English in comparison to the twins.
Anyway, Claire and I followed Dieu and Hien on our bikes to the coffee house first while Lanh went to pick up her 18 month old daughter Chip Hoi (really, really cute). I had one of the most delish Vietnamese ice coffees ever..perhaps it is because I haven't had one in a week. We chatted a bit and then Lanh invites the two of us over for dinner tonight. Very nice of her.
Phuong, our interpreter with the volunteer program mentioned to us this morning that there are a couple of football players that play with the Tam Ky team from Brazil and Uganda that would like to meet up with us. Apparently they met with previous volunteers and would hang out?? We'll see how this goes. I think I may still be out to dinner so perhaps another time for me..
Okay, off to do a bit of "shopping" for a hostess gift. What I will find, who knows??
More tomorrow.
