Pirate Camp
Well Martin and Cecilie we found it!.. Great directions and spot on. We drove past the entrance twice before we realized it really was that easy. We spent two nights in Chatelaillon-Plage at the pirate camp getting used to Van life.. subject of another blog. It was quite eery as the place was completely deserted but it was a lovely little town with golden sand beach on the sea front and one can quite easily see how it would be absolutely packed in Aout. We decided to have a look at Ile de Re after recommendations from Mr Kitson re wind surfing.. but ended up christening it ile de old! as we didn't meet a person under 60 the whole time we camped there.. I think it is just a very popular old persons destination in June as it was packed with pensioners from all countries.. loads of brits on camping tickets getting their "good value" It is a beautiful island off La Rochelle with 150km of cycle paths that are truly cycle roads rather than just a tack on to the cars road. We did a mammoth cycle around the island ending in a 40km windward beat on the bikes.. it was blowing!... there we discovered another of Betties quirks.. if your not wearing rubber shoes when she is plugged into the mains she charges up very quickly and gives you a nice little tingle everytime you touch the door handles!.. But we soon solved that problem by bypassing her internal electrics. We now run a cord in through the window and have it split off to run the fridge, cool box and charge our assorted goodies.
