I am in Vienna, also known as Wien, for the finals of the Euro Cup 2008. I arrived yesterday after an easy train ride through the Austrian countryside. It was my first day of travel on my eurail pass and it was very easy navigating the train stations, surprisingly. I am very pleased with the lack of snags and hang ups I have experienced so far, but Im sure this will change eventually.

Originally I had planned on leaving Munich and the 24 of June, but since Germany made it to the semi finals I decided to stay there and watch the game in Germany. Fortunately I was able to find a hostel on short notice, as the one I was staying at was booked. What luck I had when I arrived at the A1 Wohnheim hostel on a quiet shady street across from a huge park. It was such a nice change of pace from chaotic meininger hostel which was in the city across from a brewery. I realize again how little of a city person I really am and the fresh air and open park was paradise. Unfortunately because of the relatively remote location I was not able to use internet, hence the length of this entry.

I watched the Germany v Turkey semi final at the scheken peter restaurant, which means the pig peter restaurant, somewhat odd, on projection screens in their courtyard. It has been raining all through the area and we were lucky that it let up for the match or they would not have been able to show the projectors. A few half liters of weiss beir (wheat beer) and some delicious brawtwurst and kraut made it an excellent evening. Not to mention Germany pulled off a spirited victory 3 to 2 to advance to the finals. As I stood and cheered and chanted duetchland with the locals I was ecstatic that I decided to stay.

Vienna is gorgeous and I was in awe as I wandered the empty streets early this morning. Ive heard it hundreds of times how amazing the architecture of Europe is, but of course nothing is like seeing it up close in the real. I go now to wander more, probably down to the fan zone for some more soccer fun. My roommate last night said that it was possible to buy scalped tickets for not that much, he got semi finals tickets for 75 euro, and I have decided to try and find something reasonable for the championship. I doubt I will find 75 euro tickets but if it is any where close to that ball park, I would be a fool to pass up the championship match.
