Route to Dr Sun Yetsen's mausoleum - part 1More sightseeing planned for today, the good news is that it isn’t so hot today, the bad news is that it’s raining again so we pack the trusty umbrellas. Destination Zhongshan Mountain National Park where there are several large monuments to important people and the site of 600 y.o. temples. According to the tourist guide it’s 21 sq.km of forest mountain with about eight different attractions of which we visited three. Dr Sun Yatsen’s mausoleum was the biggest and with 392 steps up to it was also the most hard work. Interesting to see how much time, effort and money they put into memorializing their communist leaders. The best was the site of the old Ming Dynasty Imperial Palace which was pretty cool to look around and think what it must have been like 600 years ago. The Temple was pretty neat too as it was a bit different from every other temple in terms of it’s architecture, it was brick with a high vault ceiling with no beams - just something a bit different. It would have been nice to have visited in better conditions as I wouldn’t have minded the walk to the top of the mountain to see

The taxi to and from the park took us along part of the Nanjing City wall - the oldest surviving city wall in the world. I would have guessed it at about 10-12 metres tall and it’s 600 years old as well, it looked pretty impressive but I guess it didn’t protect them from the Japs in 1937. After we got back at about 4 we just felt like kicking back and relaxing so we had showers, declined dinner and headed to the hotel lounge bar. The waiter spoke good English, they were playing English music and it was really comfortable. A couple of nice cold coronas was just what the doctor ordered and felt like a nice little taste of normality.

China is not a communist country any more
Dr. Sun Yatsen is not a communist leader. He was among the first group of ppl who promoted democracy in China, which contributed to the collapse of Qing dynasty. He was also the founder of Chinese Nationalist Party, the rival of the Communist Party during Chinese Civil War Dr. Sun is regarded as the father of modern China by both People's Rep. of China and Rep. of China(aka Taiwan) ...
