hey everyone,
we had hoped to get a few more pictures uploaded last sunday, but we woke up to the entire island suffering from a loss of power. it wasn´t too bad, but trying to pack up a hostel room with no light is a bit tricky. it also meant no access to the computers before heading up to the reserve.
life at the reserve has been a lot of fun. ryan is building a shed for compost beds behind the kitchen, so he is getting to use his engineering ´skills´. ive been working on the group projects.. such as planting, macheteing (ekk!) and coffee production. this week we got some new volunteers and one of them is a girl from england who is also a geographer! we had planned to get started on an invasive species project together this week doing some GPS stuff, among other things, but the station leader had to leave unexpectedly for a family situation, so that got put on hold until he gets back since we need to get approval and what not from him to begin it.
we´re back in port today, because we got talked into going on this four day tour. every volunteer there before us went on the trip and said it is an absolute must, so we´ve coughed up our cash and leave at 6am tomorrow. we´re going with 7 other volunteers. the volunteer coordinator strongly supported this and encouraged us to head off, even though it means missing a day and a half of work. we also have to miss the friday hike so that kind of sucks. in a nutshell, this tour will take us to several of the islands and hopefully we will get to see some pretty cool things that we wouldn´t have been able to on our own (they´re really strict about needing guides and stuff here for a lot of places, and they cost about $80 per visit, so this will take care of the guide issue). the connection is pretty slow here and the page isn´t loading well.. but if you want to see more of what we will be doing, it should be somewhere on this page: www.sharksky.com
thats it for now.. hopefully we can update after the tour and maybe start getting some more pictures up if we can ever find a fast enough connection.
