Entry 31 -- The Abomination That Wreaks Desolation

By late winter we had settled into our new surroundings quite comfortably. Even at the bleakest time of year, the stark beauty of the area was undeniable, especially after a major snowfall. The rocky, barren landscape would be blanketed in deep, white, pristine snow as far as the eye could see in all directions, untouched by the presence of man. Our residence was just a short distance from the harbour at the top of a rise. We could see the grey blue, often angry water of the Sea. The power and awesome nature of God was never far from one's mind in such a location.

We fell into a work routine that seemed to fit us both. The typical morning began at five o'clock. At that time Professor Levine and I would meet in the library. Upon the Professor's insistence, we commenced our study with the book of Malachi, analysing it in meticulous detail, beginning with the affirmation of God's love for his people and working through to "the Day of the Lord". Our work was facilitated by Professor Levine's extraordinary knowledge of the history, subtleties of language and culture of the Hebrews, combined with his humble faith in God and an ability to make complex concepts easily understood. We would spend three hours in study.

By half past eight we were exhausted, although wide-awake due to the fact that we had consumed excessive amounts of coffee. The Professor and I would share an enormous breakfast, pull on our 'skin boots' (made from sealskin, a gift from one of our neighbours) and go for a long walk in the countryside. This would clear the cobwebs as it were. It was during these times that we would have our most interesting theological debates. Professor Levine was devout. He sincerely believed that Jesus of Nazareth was not the Messiah prophesied in the Hebrew scriptures. Although he admitted some correlation between the Jesus of history and prophecy, he argued quite convincingly that the correlation was only ninety per cent. In his opinion, prophecy had to be one hundred per cent accurate to be fulfilled.

I, on the other hand, argued the contrary position. And, I dare say, the Reverend H. Nigel Fox was articulate and scholarly. We both learned a great deal about each others beliefs.

When it came to the 'Wolf', we were perplexed: "You must see, Professor, that Germany's false Messiah seems to fulfil every prophecy. From where I stand, the correlation is perfect. I have not the slightest doubt that if one were able to take hell and turn it upside down, the inscription on the bottom would read 'made in Germany'.

Professor Levine nodded his agreement. The real issue challenging us was whether or not the Führer fulfilled Biblical prophecy because he ‘believes' he is the Wolf of the Apocalypse or because he is the . . . Both of us were beginning to think the unthinkable. In any event, the German "psychopath" became quite predictable. We were able to anticipate his every move.

The Club

The lunch table was generally set by midday and I would have a nap for the hour following the meal. In the post meridiem we would resume work at three o'clock. Professor Levine worked on Equidistant Letter Sequencing while I dealt eschatology. Then at six o'clock I would head to "the club". The atmosphere was friendly and good relationships began to develop over a few pints - Molson being the ale of preference. I was always careful to keep my cover but on this one night I noticed that there was a bit of tension in the air.

"'ere's the Parson, byes . . . . Reverend, let me get you a pint. It's good for what ever 'ales' ya!" (Laughs all around).

"Siddown, Parson. Yer lookin' mighty parched. 'ad a good day, 'ave ya?"

"Quite so, a wonderful day. How can one not have a marvellous day in Newfoundland?"

"Did you ever hear. . .

Later that evening I told the Professor that our "cover" may have been compromised. I also told him of the simple idea proposed by the local folk. Special Operations was to plant a number of false stories. Since the German leadership believed in horoscopes; at every critical point in the war, bogus horoscopes would be planted. The result was far more effective than we could have imagined. We threw the superstitious Germans into a tizzy. Before long, astrologers, mystics, etcetera, were being rounded up by Hitler and executed.

Next we planted false stories about the 'talisman'. Then we let it be known that at séances, spirits were informing us of the German High Command's important military secrets. The many, many messages 'from' the Dark Gods could be summed up as follows: Germany was doomed and death of their crazed leader was at hand. In all the SOE put 67 of our "ideas" into action. We even got the Chinese involved; who at a seance in a temple in Macao, predicted Hitler's demise. Reuters News Agency picked up the story! It can be fairly said that we organised an 'elaborate orchestra' of Hitler’s fate which 'echoed' round the world. This broke down the belief that the Führer was a 'superman'. This 'music' was heard within Germany, even reaching the ears of 'Madman' himself; having a most unsettling effect on his judgment. The confidence of the enemy had been shaken.

A Holocaust; an Abomination of such magnitude . . .

Although we spent only six hours a day in study, our work came along very well. The experience of analysing God's word with such a learned man was remarkable. It can best be likened to the euphoric feelings of a shortsighted man who puts on a pair of spectacles for the first time: everything is suddenly crisp and clear. My associate, Professor Levine, was quite a daunting man at first glance: poker-straight posture coupled with thick, jet-black hair combed straight back gave an almost military bearing. Piercing eyes almost black in colour; stared out from under brows often pulled down into a puzzled frown. His high cheekbones, copper complexion and eagle-like nose reminded me of the Cree Indians I had met in America. He was a very intense man.

Like every good Jew he knew of the Abomination prophesied in the Old Testament of the Bible. That the King Who Exalts Himself shall vent his fury against the Holy Covenant and show favour to those who forsake the Holy Covenant. He shall set up the abomination that causes desolation. He will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. The People of Holy Covenant shall fall by the sword, or be burned in a fiery holocaust. As they fall, they will receive a little help. The King Who Exalts Himself shall do as he pleases. He shall magnify himself above every god and shall say unheard-of things against the God of gods. He shall be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been determined must take place... The Talmud and other books go into even greater detail explaining that this "time of great distress" is central to the Jewish experience. It will result in the coming of the Messiah and the Restoration of Israel. Professor Levine, the foremost expert in the world, was beginning to suspect that this Biblical prophesy was unfolding before us.

During one of our sessions when we were discussing his Equidistant Letter Sequencing, I requested that he take those sections of the Torah and the Prophets dealing with the 'Contemptible One' and sequence them according to his theory. I was skeptical but I must admit Professor Levine results were astonishing. Two weeks later, (using the military's MACD) we sequenced the "abomination that wreaks desolation", as recorded in the Book of Daniel and alluded to in the Gospel of Matthew. This led us to a curious list of six European cities: Auschwitz, Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Mauthausen and Treblinka.

Over the months we played with the data, researched the holocaust codes, and did more sequencing. We began to believe that Germany was about to systematically eliminate the Hebrew people from amongst the nations of the world in order "that the name of Israel be remembered no more". (Psalm 83:4)

OK with us
QUESTION Hi Bryan and Miranda, My name is Andrea Short and I am from Cook's Harbour, Newfoundland, and I am now attending the College of the North Atlantic in St. John's, taking graphic design. For one of my projects, we have to complete a 56-page magazine, all our own. I'm basing mine on Newfoundland, its history and culture, and just stories about the Island. I came across your story and have read it over and over many times. Mostly wondering about Nigel Fox, as, I guess, many did. But I was wondering if I could use parts of your journal in a story I am writing for my magazine. Mostly the part about coming to Cook's Harbour and everywhere you went, people kept telling you it was the worst weather, in canada, in newfoundland, on the northern peninsula, and in the community itself. It would be greatly appreciated to use this. But I understand if you wouldn't want me to. All the Best. Thank you, Andrea ANSWER You have my permission to use our blog. Note. We have changed the name to 'Nigel" and others. You will likely be able to figure out their real names. We request that you do not leak them. Bryan
