Bogazici (Bosphorus) University is the first “University” that we visited. I’ll explain why I said it that way in a minute. The Robert College was founded in 1863 here in Turkey. It was an American university meaning it was run by Americans and Turkish people. From what I understand there was a dean from both countries that ran the school. Later the original building that was the Robert College was turned into a high school, but the other parts of the campus were turned into other schools. This is one branch of the Robert’s College and it was inaugurated in 1971. Almost 10,000 students attend this university 8000 undergraduate and 2000 graduate. It has a BEAUTIFUL view of the Bosphorus . Tuition runs about $1000 per year for Turkish citizens and $3000 for international students. Since this is run like an American university it is the ONLY University where women are allowed to wear headscarves for religious purposes. Women are NOT allowed on college campuses with headscarves at any other campus in Turkey because they say it is not just for religious purposes that it brings to many politics to the universities. The campus was basically like any

Let me give you a bit of information about Turkish schools. It is mandatory that all students attend school for eight years starting when they are 7. When they are 15 they must decide what type of high school they want to attend, either regular or technical. There are also high schools that specialize in Math and Science which students have to pass a test to get into. Students that attend either a regular school or a special school have a better chance of getting into a university. At the end of high school students take a big exam that shows which colleges they can get into. There aren’t a lot of spots available for incoming college students so it is very competitive to get in.

Private schools here on any level are called “colleges”. It took us several visits to what we thought would be a college and turned out to be an elementary and middle school.

After lunch we visited the Istanbul Stock Exchange. The main thing that I got out of that was the fact that it has funded 321 schools so far this year and hopes to have funded up to

400 by year’s end. In terms of the number of students; 220,000 will benefit from this project.

Our meeting was on the Asian side of Istanbul tonight. As usual things went well… except the battery in our remote’s batteries died that we used to advance our presentation. Oh well we did it the old fashioned way and clicked the mouse to advance it. It was a LONG day after our 14 hour bus ride back from Antalaya.

What an interesting day learing about all the schools and how they are run! Loved the pictures. Brooke requests more pictures with Sarah in them. She said where is a picture of "my Sarah"? She also wants to tell you that she is watching Little Bear. Troy is in Dallas for the night so we are having a slumber party.
