Didn't think it rained much in Oz, but it does, and it's bigger and wetter rain here, and it seems to come without any warning. We've been chilling in our orange van, here at the lovely Rainbow Beach, sitting out the rain...

'...Day 19 in the Big Brother Stupid Van: Captain Airwofl is rolling fags and now has a tidy store of 346 emergency smokes under his pillow. Pikey Pat's winning so far in the 'Grow A Hunchback' game, but Wofl's got a lead in the 'Cover Up The Holes On The Van Ceiling & Walls' sticker game as he eats more fruit...'

...We've seen a few 'Hippy Campers' around Rainbow and they look like newer vans with definitely better conversions inside - fridge, 240v hook up, kettle... and not that much dearer looking at the website.... someone didn't do her research properly eh!

But in a growing-to-like-one's-third-nipple kind of way, we're liking the Stupid van and kind of feel for it with it's dented panels and exploited circus animal lifestyle.

And before the start of the 3 day rain-fest we'd considered getting a tour bus (something with minimal herding) to Fraser Island, a gigantic sandbar created by thousands of years of longshore drift, with lush tropical rainforests, crystal clear waters and dazzling white sandy beaches.

But as most of the tours looked a bit like 'Club 18-30's Does Fraser' and they won't give non-4x4 vehicles (and especially not a Stupid van!) a permit to go on the island, we settled with a few postcards of it from the supermarket. There, done our bit to preserve the fragile ecology of the island by not being one of the 350,000 tourists a year who sully it's pristine waters....

And 4x4's seem to be the real deal here in Queensland, 4 ltr V8's, often 2 per family - one to tow the 25 ft caravan and one to tow the boat... Or a LWB Land Cruiser pick-up with a high top, converted into a Outback Camper complete with solar panels and obligatory bronze, toned and blonde beach babe. Meanwhile, back in the UK we're all forced to drive 1 ltr bubble cars or, if you're lucky, a Bond Bug...

The beach here at Rainbow Beach is spectacular, and the sea looks lush to surf in, even when it's peeing down and gnarly. We managed to catch a fantastic rainbow over the beach, but no sign of Bungle, George, Jeffrey, or Zippy...

have you mastered the queensland wave yet? slight waggle of index finger in thanks for letting their medium sized bungalow of a vehicle go first. Accompanied by eyebrow flicker.

Hi Jo & Cathy
We don't even get the QLD wave! We get the bent little finger and sideways glance...
