How often do you end up in the wrong country?? This is the question that we were asking ourselves as we sat on the foopath in some kind of industrial estate in Cuidad del Este in Paraguay.... We weren´t meant to be here, we didn´t want to be here, we were supposed to be in Brasil......

Now before you all started painiking we actually weren´t that far away from Brasil, probably no more than a kilometre or two... but this was certainly something we hadn´t expected!!

The bus trip from Bonito to Foz do Iguacu had been long, delayed but pretty comfortable (by bus trip standards) and so aqfter starting a 2:30pm on Thursday we were very happy to arrive in Foz do Iguacu at 12pm on Friday. It was just a short bus ride into town and we would be at our accomodation. It was just a short bus ride that would be our undoing..... Now we understood that all local buses went to the local bus termianl in town which was great because that was right near where we were staying.... as we saw the terminal go past, our thoughts were naturally along the lines of "oh they must just be going down here to turn around, no need to panic" then as we saw the signs for Paraguay "oh the bus must turn around at the border", then as we went through the border "oh the bus must turn around just on the other side of the border" then as we were drving through Paraguay "oh sh*t". After some discussions with the driver it turned out that he would turn around at some point and go back so we were quite supprised when he stopped in the middle of nowhere and he told us we needed to get off????? After some charades and sign language we understood that he was going to come back and pick us up again in ten minutes (aparently he was going for lunch or something). And this is how we found ourselves on a foothpath in Paraguay.

The story does have a happy ending, the bus did come back and pick us up, and we did end up at our hotel eventually. It only added further two hours to our trip. But now we can add Paraguay to our list of countries vistied... and it only cost us $1,50 each!

Ahhh... Local buses when no one speaks the language. Gotta love it! Can't say that I've ever managed to switch countries though. Nice...
