Our next destination was Ko Pha Ngan and we arrived on Monday 10th March. The Island is much bigger than Ko Tao and seems to be directed more at travellers and tourists. Our accommodation was in a perfect position; it was situated right next to the centre of the town and the beach.
The lonely planet guide advised us to visit a beach on the other side of the Island. We took up the adventure and decided to rent out mopeds again for our transport. We started of on smooth roads however after 30minutes we hit treacherous roads. The roads were like dirt tracks and the mopeds kept slipping on the loose gravel. James fell of his bike down the hill and although it wasn’t a bad crash at all he scratched all the side of his bike. James decided to go back after an hour after he had lost his confidence however we were determined to find this beach. Another 40minutes and we had arrived. It was perfect; hardly any tourists, white sands, big crashing waves and a beach bar. We chilled for the rest of the afternoon taking advantage of the big waves that didn’t appear on our
local beach. After a bumpy ride back we decided to have dinner watching the sunset over the coast. Felt a bit bad though as I had to stop on an extremely steep hill to turn into the restaurant which meant the truck behind me stalled and he rolled along way back down to the hill. (Think he swore at me in Thai).
We returned the mopeds the next day and the owner wasn’t happy. He claimed that 3 of the bikes had scratches all over them. Caz paid his 8500 Bak (£100+) as his bike had obvious scratches and he didn’t want to experience being throttled again. However Mucs and Nicks had no scratches and he blatantly wanted to rip westerners off. After half an hour of arguing Nick paid 1000 (£25) but Muc wasn’t going to pay £100 worth that easily. Ross actually removed a fingernail scratch with sandpaper and this was when the owner swung for him. We managed to calm them both down and Ross reluctantly paid up. However Ross handed over 4000Bak not 5000 and the Thai man showed Ross his gun and said pay me all of it!! We were all pretty shook up
and all came to the decision that taxis will be our transportation from then on.
Throughout the week we often opted for the resorts pool that was on offer for us (came free with £4 accommodation). We often played volleyball and American football games whilst listening to chilled pool music. We also became friendly with Quay the owner and he took us to a pool party.
The parties we went to on Ko Pang Nyan have been some of the best parties I have ever been to. The first one we went to was a beach party next to our resort. We all bought buckets of alcohol from the vast array of stalls situated on the beach. We got involved in fire dancing again and James enjoyed musical chairs . However the highlight of the night was the people we met. Firstly I met a fellow colleague of mine from the Honey Bee restaurant Jaime. If you thought that was a coincidence we also met Gregg, our travel agent that was responsible for booking our flights in Manchester a year ago! Thirdly I then met Martina again who I had met in Ko Tao, we raved together
until the sun rose. It was very funny because we had lost the others but we stumbled across Rick dancing in the shallow waters on his own this was about 8am.
As I said we went to a pool party with resort owner later in the week. It was a great party but we didn’t stay till sunrise this time as we knew the half moon party was the day after. The half moon party was the reason we stayed on the Island for another two days. Before we hit the jungle where it was being held we bought lots of rave paint and covered ourselves in it. The venue was amazing; the dance floor and palm trees were covered in neon lights so our rave paint looked amazing. We raved for a few hours; however it was cancelled early because of elections in Bangkok so the police stopped alcohol! We therefore headed back to the beach near our resort. Rick however was feeling worse for were (sunstroke maybe) and was very sick out the jeep. At the beach we continued our party with some Irish girls we had met a few days earlier and ended up going for
an early morning paddle with them. We went home at 7am and couldn’t find Rick, we searched everywhere however he came stumbling in an hour later saying he had fallen asleep in a café with a Thai man and his dog!
Ko Pha Ngan was soo much fun and I will definitely be returning in the future.
