Greece Trip - Acropolis Dogs

Again, it was really a pleasant day and nice conditions for the hike up Acropolis. Still, a bit warm at the top, we are so glad that it’s not August. We don’t have the Acropolis to ourselves, but the crowds are small. There are almost as many stray dogs as people on Acropolis. Athens is filled with stray dogs and cats, we were told by a wonderful local woman that the city has a program that sterilizes and vaccinates both cats and dogs. All we can confirm is that the dogs and cats we saw looked super healthy (some a little too healthy - FAT). The strays were friendly and the locals seemed to not be bothered by the animals. It appeared these dogs and cats were well taken cared of, with mats in front of shops to lie on, and scraps for them to eat. I had a doggie bag (pun intended) to give some scraps to one of the many stray I anticipated encountering on the walk home from dinner one evening. The first two dogs snubbed my offerings.... those are well feed/spoiled dogs. I finally found two cats and two dogs who were most happy with the dinner (we were all happy). Someone has the odd job of picking up after these strays, because we saw only a few piles while walking the street (which we did a lot). We began to notice that certain dogs and certain cats ruled certain neighborhoods. They each had their own area. Tim and I watched in amazement as these strays crossed the most busy of streets (not pedestrian friendly), played in parks and along side ancient ruins. During our visit they would jogged pass us like they knew exactly where they were going. The strays were much amusement for us the entire trip, as we were missing our own two dogs. We wondered how Riley and Bella would fare in a city like Athens???
