Edit Blog Post
Christmas 2007, Seoul
OK...so Christmas is the main theme of this particular blog, but because we haven't published a blog in quite some time now, Larry thought we should add a few more pictures that we had floating around. So, the first few pictures, although random, are some things we were up to before Christmas time....having lunch with some of our E.V. friends in Seoul at one of our favorite restaurants ("Mad for Garlic"), working at our new workplace (a private English academy in Daechi-dong, Seoul), and seeing our friend Brad in one of his bi-monthly shows with SCI (the Seoul Comedy Improv group). What a hoot!
But that's enough with the super old pictures...now we'll move onto just the "old" ones from the holidays. Right before the holidays, we had a lovely dinner party with all of the people we work with at a nice Italian restaurant. There were even some people there from another company, a publishing company called
English Hunt, that our boss at the academy also owns. It wasn't the best party...everyone worked that night (in Korea, there are no days where EVERYONE has the night off!)...and so as people finished their classes/ended their daily
shift...they headed to the restaurant. So, needless to say, we didn't all eat together...it was a very sporadic evening....but the food was good at least! 😊
Finally, this brings us to Christmas morning and the rest of the day. As you can see, we set up a cute little Christmas tree in our living room, and we had plenty of presents to open that morning (AND stockings) - thanks to our wonderful families back at home! The rest of the morning/afternoon was spent at our good friend Brad's place...where about 8 of us (some friends from our old jobs at English Village came out) gathered to hang out, drink some wine and nibble on snacks. At dinner time though, we all packed back into the car and headed over to a place called
The Wolfhound.
The Wolfhound is a very westernized place (pub/restaurant) located in the heart of Itaewon - "Foreigner central". Here we had an awesome all-u-can-eat buffet dinner, complete with turkey, stuffing, cranberries, and all the fixings. (Hey, nothing says Christmas like an all-u-can-eat buffet in Korea, OK?) 😱
And New Year's Eve was equally nice. NYE was spent with two of our good friends, Mike
and Chloe (also from English Village). On this evening, we all met up and went to an extraordinarily beautiful restaurant called
Tribeca in the trendy area of Seoul known as Apgujeong. It was a little overpriced here (a coke cost about $14!)...but the food and the atmosphere were well worth it. After dinner, we headed over to the Bosingak Bell Tower in the center of Seoul to celebrate the New Year "Times' Square" style! Similar to last year's celebration, we walked along the Cheonggye Stream and then ended up drinking in the middle of the street - watching the performers on the big stage set up in the middle of the intersection. At midnight there was a countdown and tons of fireworks! It was lots of fun - check out the attached video to see more!
And finally, the last few pictures are from a school project that I am helping my little cousin, Trevor, with back in Michigan. Recently in their 2nd grade class, they read a book called "Flat Stanley," in which a little boy gets flattened after a bulletin board falls on him, but he soon realizes that being flat isn't so bad - because he
can mail himself in an envelope to see his friends. Well, as you can see, my cousin Trevor made a "flat Stanley" and sent him to me in the mail. My part of the project included taking Stanley around with me in my everyday life and taking pictures with Stanley, so that I can mail them back to Trevor and he can learn more about where I live and what it's like here in Korea. These are only a few of the pictures I took - Stanley and I with some of the Korean students I teach at my academy, Stanley in front of the infamous 63 Building, and Stanley enjoying conveyor-belt sushi with us in the city of Ilsan - but as you could've probably guessed, Larry and I had quite a lot of fun helping him out with this project!
Well, that's all for now. If you're still reading this far, Larry and I hope all is well with you too, and we hope to hear from you soon! Stay tuned for our next blog - our February vacation in Boracay, in the Philippines!
Love,
Larry & Melanie

Flat Stan!
What a riot! The pics with Flat Stanley are great! I did the same thing for my brother Bob's daughter Tina about a year back and showed her version - Flat Sandy - around San Pedro, California. My son Anderson helped, and we had a ball!
