Bec C looking petrified after Bec S rocked the kayak (on purpose)
We arrived in Queenstown and instantly loved it. Although it looked a bit pricey we loved the vibe it gave off and were stunned at its beauty. The lake glissened a perfect blue and had a mountainous backdrop. The disappointment soon showed itself as we realised that we only had one night in this amazing place. Although we thought that Queenstown had such a small town centre for being such a well known place it was full of life nonetheless.

It would have been a scandal if we had left the adventure capital of New Zealand without taking part in some sort of activity. So off we went and did a bungyjump, only joking, we had fun on the luge instead. This involved a very 'scary' ride up the side of a mountain in the skylines gondola. The luge is basically a scaled down version of a go-cart and gravity does all the work. We decided to have a dab at both the scenic and adventure tracks. The scenic track didn't have too much speed but it had all the views. We had panoramic views of Queenstown and its amazing lake.

The adventurous track however was taken far more

seriously as the race commenced between the Becs'. Bec S had the early lead but Bec C came steaming up behind her and cheekliy took the inside lane as Bec S seemed a little nervy on the corners. Bec S almost attempted a take over but her bottle failed as the tunnel neared and fear of a total wipeout loomed. Shortly afterwards Bec C sped over the finish line and was the proud winner. Although the luge is probably the tamest activity found in Queenstown it was still a lot of fun and well worth the trip. Before making our way to Te Anau we had a fun game of crazy golf. The set up is rather bizzarre as it was indoor and the holes were 18 city representations. Bec S restored some self esteem by totally battering Bec C, however a lollypop and a free drink took the pain away.

Te Anau was the most southern stop for us in the South Island and was our base for the most wonderful Milford Sound. Arriving in Te Anau and after passing numerous deer we arrived to rain, rain and more rain. This unnerved us slightly as we believed that to get the full Milford Sound experience the weather had to be amazing, the praying began. That evening we treated ourselves to a bottle of Rose and some mince (meat is a luxury these days never mind alcohol). Thankfully the weather changed for the better and it was gorgeous the day we visited the Sound. We decided to kayak the Sound as it was something neither of us had done before but felt like it could be fun and were better than to have your first experience other than in Fjordland. In contrast with its name Milford, it is actually a Fjord were it has been created by glacial movement as opposed to a Sound which is the work of a river. Being at sea level really gave us some perspective of the height of the mountains around us, they really do tower over you.

In total we spent five and a half hours on the water capturing Mitre Peak and the fur seals in all their glory. Slighty disappointed to not see any dolphins though. With Bec C steering and Bec S in charge of paddling, Team Becs got to see Milford Sound in a more unique manner

and in one that we thouroughly enjoyed. The only downside other than the sandflies, it wasn't as tranquil as we had hoped. Boats chugged up and down and with Milford being the second busiest airport in NZ after Auckland the noise level rarely hit peaceful zero but when it did just for a few seconds, pure tranquilty. However one could say its all part of the experience.

The day was topped off with a few sights on the way home with tea and biscuits which is always a winner to Becs S. The self explanatory Mirror Lakes were beautiful and the Chasm was rather unique. It is basically an example of what beauty air and water can achieve. The Homer Tunnel was also quite quirky with it being a 1km one way tunnel which looked as though it was made with a couple of pic-axes.
