Today we left Rangiora and travelled through the Southern Alps via Arthur's Pass to Hokitika.
We seemed to be travelling in the opposite direction to a group on a motorcycle rally. Apparently 2000 motorcyclists had met in Hokitika and were having a ride out across Arthur's Pass. As one of the motorcyclists said to us “it is an awesome ride”.
We stopped several times in the mountains for Dinah to take pictures but I think it would be very difficult to capture the grandeur of these mountains.
We had a forgettable cup of coffee in Kumara and an even more forgettable sandwich. Then we pressed on to Hokitika where we are stopping for the night in a very pleasant beachside motel. Straight out of the back door and onto the beach. This beach is on the Tasman sea which gets south westerly winds. This brings lots of driftwood onto the beach and some look like sculptures as they are polished by the sea and sand. There was a driftwood sculpture competition in Hokitika for holidaymakers which was fun to photograph.
As the beach was so close to our cabin I thought it was time I put on my
Christmas present from Amy, a new pair of beach shorts and tee shirt. What do you think Amy, cool dude!!
There is a short walk opposite the motel which we plan to do tonight and see the glow worms in the bush.
Tomorrow we are off for a helicopter trip up to the Fox glacier.
