Waterfall out on the sound
We left Queenstown on Friday and headed for Te Anau the gateway to Milford Sounds (Fiordland) and managed to book a two nights stay in a lodge overlooking the Te Anau lakes. The following day we visited Milford Sounds - self drived and then took a cruise, which was amazing - amongst all the beauty and scereny we saw dolphins that came really close to our boat and started to ride the bow waves as well as a close up peek of the furseals bathing on the rocks. The cruise was great and very imformative...... Definately would recommend this trip and a travelers tip: there is no petrol station from Te Anau to Milford Sounds so you need to ensure that you fill up beforehand as the trip is 250kms (round trip) without stopping.. The Milford Sound Road is amazing, lush sub-tropics, snow cap mountains and stunning waterfalls so loads of pics to be had. Also there isn't much at Milford other than the terminal for the cruises and a cafe so ensure you pack some lunch. We had packed a picnic beforehand thanks to my loney planet book - very useful and gives you great tips....... Ensure you take some warm clothes too in case it rains - great for the waterfalls though as you get better effects when it has been raining!!

Today we left Te Anau for The Catlins and we took the scenic route, it was superb - driving through lush evergreen....... On our way to The Catlins we stopped off at lots of places on the way such as the Clifden Suspension Bridge built in 1899, Cosy Nook where it was once a whaling station and Te Waewae Bay to see the lighthouse where we continued walking down the beach and spotted a huge sealion bathing on the beach in the sand, as well as, a penguin bathing on the rocks..... We continued through The Catlins and stopped off at Curio Bay to have a swim where Hector Dolphins (smallest species in the world and endangered) come swimming close to the bay... It was amazing - as I was swimming the dolphins came near me and I could see a pod of them a bit further out, it has been a very memorable day! We are staying in a house a few minutes away from Curio Bay - only cost us 30GPB for both of
