Edit Blog Post
Hello All! I thought I would try the travel blog thing to actually keep track of this trip and all the crazy trips and exciting adventures. So Welcome!
So I guess of course I should start with the trip over...
Day 1/2: Silly me, I stayed up most of the night and thought I would make it up during the flight over as I've done before and flew from st. louis to chicago (O'Hare for all of you familiar with THAT airport...) and had no problem, then had to transfer to the international terminal b/c i flew with Aer Lingus. What a differnt world! After standing in line for 1 1/2 hrs to go through security it's like you actually go to a different country. The restrooms are now labeled TOILETS and there are little bars that sell you a drink or two and you can walk around anywhere with your drink. The plane landed on time and took off and I had no problem. We even had the chance to choose between movies and tv shows and games we could play on the plane. Pretty much the coolest flight over ever.
Then I landed in Ireland
St. Andrews
This is the beach at St. Andrews. It's hugh and long and obviously beautiful... and the sun didn't come up for another hour or two which was strange at 9am. I wondered around the airport and found my gate and quickly zoned out and waited for the plane. It got more and more crowded and by the time I realized the plane wasn't there I was having a very hard time staying awake. About 1/2 hr late the plane pulls up and we're ready to board and they tell me I don't have the right ticket/ boarding pass and scared the crap out of me. But it all worked out and i got on the plane and promptly fell asleep and woke up thinking we hadn't yet taken off. This is my funny story of the morning... I had gotten a seat in the 2nd row and was thinking how awesome that was and I would get off and be first in line out the door. Well the guy next to me oviously thought the same and was super anxious to get off the plane and raring to go. After cross check the flight attendent told us that we would be departing from the back of the plane and the guys face just fell.
I couldn't help but laugh at the irony.
John picked me up and I called and woke my parents up for the 2nd time before 5am to tell them we'd arrived safely and we started the trek home. ( btw, if you ever land at the edinburgh airport you'll know it by the upside down martini glass of a control tower.) On the way home we had lunch at Burger King and I was once again reminded that I am strange for wanting tap water and plain sandwiches. John got a meal and they gave him this neat sock for his MP3 player.
John says that I fell asleep after we got home but I am adament it was ATLEAST an hour. Had a nice long nap and John and I cooked for dinner. He made some really great hamburgers with blue cheese and bacon and I made a giant mushroom. After that I fell asleep pretty soon again and slept though most of the night to balance out my crazy 48 hours of awakeness and woke up before 7am. Oh well.
Saturday Day 2: We decided that we needed an adventure right off so we
St. Andrews
The beach and the town. decided to make a trip to St. Andrews (the birthplace of golf, the college of Prince Williams and a beautiful little town) and have some lunch and walk on the beach.
We wondered round the town, walked on the beach and had lunch at a little place where we had Haggis Fritters that were to die for. (deep fried haggis for anyone that doesn't know) but when the main courses came around the pizza i ordered was burned on top and not cooked underneath and John's baked potato was microwaved. apparently we chose the wrong place. After that we wondered around some more and headed home. We stopped by the store and watched tv and hung out for the night.
Sunday Day 3: We we up later and entertained ourselves, had a few cups o' tea and then decorated the Christmas tree and had an early dinner. At about 4pm we headed out to Edinburgh to meet Ali (John's brother) and see John's old band preform (first called Remedy, then Carpe Diem and now called My Patron Saint fyi). We got to Ali's and played Wii for a while and John and I wailed on each other
John and Me
John and Myself.. being all artistic. It's what I do. in the Boxing game (It really does give you a massive workout and my back is killing me today... way to go Wii)
After the action packed game we headed out to find The Ark. (haha) which is the bar the band was playing at. Took a taxi and then wondered down Princes Street (more pictures of that due after New Years as that where we'll be for the Hogmany Street Party or New Years Party as a translation.) We found The Ark straight off (guess I could give those archeologists a tip or two) and headed upstairs to get a drink and see John's friends.
The band was good and we had a fun time except the sound man was a bit of an amatur and the drinks were expensive but it was a nice intamit place for the band. After that, everyone headed out and John and I decided to walk home and see more of the city even though it was hella cold. We hit up another bar on the way home that I'd been to in 2002 when we were here and discovered the coolezst thing in the bathroom. For anyone who has seen
St. Andrews Beach
The sand looks like water but it's sand. Beautiful beach that seems to go on for EVER! the commercial (or advert) for the dyson hand dryer that is "a new way to dry your hands" and blows the water off like the dryers at car washes... that was in the bathroom! It was very exciting for me.
After that we decided to hunt down a kebab shop (read food for those who have been drinking... a cheaper gyro) and had a wonderful and satisfying kebab after 2 years. The rest of the evening we finished the walk home (probably 2 or 3 miles) and had a great time looking at the city and talking.
Monday is another day and another post...
