We left the Coromandel Peninsula to drive across country to Waitomo for the famous glow worm caves.

We had been advised by the old couple at the camp ground that we should do the Black Water Rafting instead of just the walking tour of the glow worms. So we thought that if they could do it, then so could we! Laura was still a little nervous because when we booked it they said that the water level was high and the currents were strong due to the recent rain and that you needed to be a good swimmer!

We were suited in some very fetching wetsuits, rubber boots, shorts and helmets and driven to the caves, where we picked up our ‘rafts’ (rubber rings!)!!

From there we went into the caves where we did a mixture of walking, rafting, jumping down waterfalls and having to try and stand up right and keep hold of the ring in the strong currents. We also had to go under very low rocks where the gap was even smaller because of the water level. Laura was a little nervous to begin with, as she thought she was going to be swept away never to be seen again, but got into it in the end!

During the trip we turned off all our lights and saw some amazing glow worms, lighting up the ceiling of the caves. They did give a spiel all about them, but we couldn’t hear because of all the water - the chocolate they handed out was good though!!

At the end of the caves trip we had to navigate our way out of the caves in the dark, only using the light at the end of the tunnel as our guide. We then floated down the river back to the safety of the van!

It was a freezing day so we were really pleased to have the wetsuits on, but getting them off was a job in itself. You needed to sit on a bench, hold on tight and have someone really yank to get it off. I pulled a little hard on Laura's suit and unfortunately she came with the suit, flying of the bench and landing on her arse - luckily she saw the funny side! A hot shower, soup and a bagel followed to warm us up!

Before heading on to Rotorua we went to see some rabbit shearing - see the pictures!
