Nazca Lines
Alien run-way So we were on our way to Nazca. We left Ica early in the morning following Lynsey making a great effort at making a hotel reservation by phone in spanglish. At least we knew we had a bed for the night. We headed to the Cruz Del Sur bus station hoping to jump on a bus to Nazca. We were immediately shot down and told that there was only one seat left. This took a few moments to register as we couldnt or wouldnt accept that this was possible. Following "what are we going to do now?" (by Ross) we walked across the street and hopped onto a Soyuz bus used by the locals. This saved us quite a bit of cash and was just as comfortable.
We arrived in Nazca two hours later after driving through desert. On arrival we were greeted by an annoying tour agent who followed us all the way to our hotel, by foot, even though Lynsey had given one of her looks!!
We were in Nazca to look at the mysterious Nazca Lines which scatter the desert. We booked our flight and as always felt a little nervous about whether they would actualy turn
up the next morning.
We completed our day by having a great meal at Playa Mayor in the Plaza de Armas. Ross again ordered badly by ordering chicken, which turned out to be deep fried, so not happy. Lynsey however, ordered 'Parrillas' which is grilled steak cooked in a large bbq. It was so good. After some negotiations, the food was shared.
Saturday 1th November
A very early start today. We had gone to bed early the previous night in order that we would be prepared for our 8 o'clock flight. Well it is was not a good nights sleep! The streets were noisy and some guy using the loudest PA system was giving dance lessons in spanish. All he kept saying was 'si doble a la deracha' which means 'turn right'. That is all we could make out. If that wasnt enough with the microphone and peruvian music, our hotel seems to have a chicken farm on one of the roof tops beside our room. The roosters were 'cock-a-doodling' all night.
After very little sleep we got up half expecting our guide Cesar not to turn up. But true to his word, at 7.30am he
The Pampas
Nazca landscape was there with a big smile. Our worry now was what kind of plane we would get, hoping not a paper one, ha ha!! After watching a bit of the documentary by the BBC on Maria Reiche and her work on the Lines, we boarded our little six seater plane. The views from the plane of both the Lines and the landscape were fantastic. We flew over the Pampa de San Jose where we could see thousands of straight lines across the land. The pilot pointed out some of the figures including the killer whale, but to be honest we couldnt see this one, not a good start. He then pointed out the alien, spider, hands, condor and tree. The pictures do not do them justice. Some of the figures were smaller than expected but they were still an impressive sight. We are glad we took a flight rather than simply use the watch out tower. It was an amazing landscape, one we will never forget.
