Ich bin ein Berliner!
We had a long drive to Berlin and got in around 5 or 6 in rainy weather. We stopped for a little bit at a part of the Berlin Wall that is still intact and took some pictures and walked around. When we got to the hotel we (the girls-Michelle x 2, Monique, Courtney, Siobhan, and me) decided to stay in since we had had 2 long nights in Amsterdam, not to mention it was also crappy, rainy, and cold. After dinner we headed to the bar at the hotel where I thought it would be a good idea to start playing some drinking games. I ran upstairs to get my trusty George W. playing cards that I had gotten on my trip to D.C. the summer before and loved using whenever possible. (Those caused quite the hype as throughout the night anytime someone picked them up they were always like, "Is this George Bush? What's that about?" Really funny. And since most people weren't American...) We ordered some drinks and started playing King's Cup. As the night went more people joined us when they figured out what we were doing. And our early night in ended
up being a late, crazy, card and pool playing night in the hotel bar. I had a great time! The next day we got up early to go on a walking tour of Berlin. We started in Alexanderplatz and proceded to walk around and hear the history of the city. We went to the Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, the place where Hitler's bunker once was (it was destroyed, obviously), the Nazi headquarters, Berlin Wall, and the Checkpoint CHarlie Museum. It was a long walk - about 3 1/2 hours, but well worth it. The history of Berlin is very interesting, especially if your a dork like me and like hearing about WWII. I also learned a lot about the Cold War and cleared up some things that I didn't know before (if you know who my American teacher was, Mr. Mowbray, you know why I'm clueless...) As I was walking around it was hard to imagine that all these things had happened not so long ago. I mean the Berlin Wall just came down in 1989. I continued to realize how powerful it was to BE in the places that I had always heard about in the past. It just

Michelle and me makes things more concrete and meaningful. After the tour, we walked around and did some errands, hit up an internet cafe, and did some shopping. Around 4 we met up with the group to go back to the hotel to get ready for dinner and our nightlife tour.
We did dinner a typical German style restaurant which I thought was pretty good. After dinner, we met up with Claudia, our nightlife tour guide. We we to 3 different bars: some turkish bar where we smoked the hookah for a bit, some other bar that I completely cannot remember the name of, an old communist bar, which played a lot of Bryan Adams (wierd), and lastly some crazy, dark nightclub which, if I hadn't been there with a lot people I knew, I may have been a little scared. We had a great time though and I drank a lot and smoked alot too (cigarettes! bad bad bad) and even did some dancing which proves that I was really having a good time. Around 2 or 3, the Michelle's, Courtney and me decided to catch a cab back to the hotel. Our cab ride was awesome! We had a really
cool driver, Reiner, who, from what I can remember, was pretty young and good looking. We told him that we only had 20 euros but that we wanted to go sightseeing since we hadn't seen Berlin at night. He was amazing and took us driving down Unter den Linden to the Brandenburg Gate and then got out and took some pictures of us. The Gate looked really pretty, but considering it was the end of the night, I didn't. He even took us cruising by the Berlin Wall where Aussie Michelle was hanging out of the sun window taking pictures. Reiner was a real trooper putting up with all of us drunk girls, but I still think it was probably the highlight of his night. He even told us what it was like in Berlin when the Berlin Wall came down since he was here and was a teenager. Very interesting. When we finally got to the hotel we ended up paying him about 35 euros since he kicked ass. Super fun stuff! By the way, drivers are crazy in Germany and the cabs are some of the nicest cars I've ever ridden in.
