Day 13 - Saturday 13th October

Having spent too long in Chiang Mai its time to move towards the Laos border, so were off to Chiang Rai.

A travel tip for travel in Thailand, most people tend to book their transport from a local tourist office, however we have found that if you buy the tickets yourself from the bus or train station then you pay about 25% of the price.

The bus arrived late afternoon in Chiang Rai and we discovered that the place was deserted. It's still low season here for a couple more weeks. However the place reminds me of a Greek or Spanish holiday isle. There are roads full of bars its a pity that they are all empty at the moment.

After killing an hour by playing pool (which I won yet again), we settled down to watch the England v Estonia football game with 2 old english blokes (mid 50's) and their Thai girlfreinds my age.

We drink the local Chiang which for just over a pound gets you a 640ml bottle of 6.3% lager. Having had three by halftime I dont remember much of the second half. I then proceeded to give Russ another kicking this time at darts.

As the rugby wouldn't finish until 4am when most places would be closed we staggered out to find a late bar that would be showing it. Luckily we didn't have to go far as the very next bar was staying open. After buying a bottle of Sangsum whisky we watched the game.

There were some annoying Canadians in as well who were supporting France so when England went 14-9 up with only a couple of mins to go I went running round the bar cheering. The next thing I remember I'd stacked it, was lying on my back with blood coming out of my ankle. I tried to pretend it was deliberate but not sure if anybody bought it.

Back at the guest house Russ found that somehow he'd managed to snap our doorkey in two, so I spent the next 10 mins picking the lock. Note to self no more Sangsum.
