Winnie and I are master chefs! I guess just being in the general vicinity of the greatest food in the world has been enough for us. Who needs to take classes when the talent is innate? Ok, maybe we are not THAT good, but we did make an incredible quiche and yummy salmon the other night. It was really funny actually, we looked up all these words that the recipe had and still had no clue what we were doing. We had to “blonde” the crust, which we took to mean make it golden brown, and it also called for a seeding of the zucchini….we ignored this, do people really seed zucchini or just the French? Regardless, our improvisations and interpretations resulted in a fantastic creation that I can only hope to replicate again later.
Winnie is the person I am spending most of my time with. She is great for me as she is really independent but also pushes me and even is at the stage where she can roll her eyes at me! Finally, a true friend in Paris! She has been great fun and we are really exploring the city together and the conversation just rolls well.
Building on Miromensnil
Very Atlas shrugged huh? I am so grateful that she is on this program! I must not squeeze this independant woman too much or she'll run away!
So, about Winnie helping me to push my boundaries: we had made a pact to go out together just the two of us a bar and see what happened, we need to meet some French people and this just does not happen in large groups of loud Americans-so off we went. I am not used to the bar scene at all so that on top of the language barrier was really funny. We got approached by this guy who after talking with us asked if we were Australian, and then said that I looked like Nicole Kidman’s sister, lesson: the pick up lines are no better in this country of Latin descent! Bummer. Regardless, the night was fun and something different.
I gave an oral report today and chose Jacque Louis David as my subject. I have not really studied him as an artist or his contribution to the Revolution so the research has been really interesting. Winnie came with me Saturday to the Louvre, I thought I might as well go reconnect with the
paintings in person before diving into the report on him. (!)Great choice. Because his canvases are SO massive it just doesn’t translate that well into photographs. (I cannot wait until my Art History class begins here! I can study the painting not a picture of the painting! AHHH!!)
Sunday there was a “garage sale” in my neighborhood and that got me out of the house and exploring my area. Sadly this was the first time I had really walked around my area! I have been so into the other neighborhoods that I have ignored my own. I know the main roads around me and the route to the park but a whole new world opened up to me Saturday. My neighborhood is so much better than I thought, and I had thought it was great! I found an amazing little creperie, a café called Hansel & Gretal, a Spanish restaurant, and a million tea houses! Score. They were packed with families and people my age too. I am going to go back tomorrow when this market is gone to see how it feels without the hoards of people. I only brought a few Euros with me today to prevent
Ile de la Cité
On my walk home from school me going too crazy and I still made out so well. I got three beautiful plates, a small bowl, rug for beside my bed, a hair pick (I think that’s what one calls the thing I got), and a necklace all for 11 Euro!! WOO HOO!
Winnie and I just bought our tickets to go to Cannes for our Fall Break next week. We are taking a train to Cannes and then staying in a town with her “aunt” or something like it in a little town between Cannes and Nice! How lucky is that?! We are going to go exploring the area by bus and, of course, by foot. My hopes include Monaco, Nice, the Alps, and perhaps a jot into Italy! When we get back from our week of adventuring we will begin our full course load, which still is up in the air at this point. I am going to attend all the courses the first week and see what I really want to take. I’ll keep you all I the loop.
Let’s see, the pictures are of things I walk by all the time and stop too look at. Some are more interesting than
Garage Sale
The garage sale by my apartment others, but this is what I am noticing as I stroll about Paris!
