The National TheatreThe National TheatreThe National Theatre

The "Orquestra Sinfonic" performing at the National Theatre. Every Tuesday night there is a free performance; tickets are on a first come first served basis. Fortunately I got one on Monday as it was packed.
Tues 25th Sept (Cont.)
Exchanged some dollars for Reais - got a good rate. Browsed around one of the local areas and found a nice ´natural food´restaurant where I had a meal. On my back to hotel 'stopped off at another restaurant for a caipirhina. However when asked afterwards for a coffee they said they didn´t do coffees( it's not unusual for restaurants not to serve coffee or tea); so ´went across the road to a cafe for one.
Got a taxi to the National Theatre (got him to agree fare for R$6 before getting in). ´Had a free ticket from yesterday for a performance by Orquestra Sifonica. Theatre was packed; comfortable and spacious; its unusual exterior architecture belied the interior which was more utilitarian than ornate. ´Listened to Mussorgsky (One night in Monte Carlo) and Khachaturian (Concerto in D minor) - the latter I didn´t know nor liked. After the interval we had the Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos (Prelude), interesting. The taxi back tried to charge me R$10 until I told him I only paid 6 to get to the theatre.

These huge bronze stauues in the "Praca Dos Tres Poderes" were made in honour of the 60,000 people who worked for three years around the clock to build the city.
