Beach lodge
Home for the last 7 weeks Im back! I'd have updated sooner but my camera was on the blink and wouldnt turn on, after some intensive investigation the battery charger was discovered as the fault and has been replaced, and on a similar subject ive also had to buy a new phone.Exciting stuff!
I have ended up in a little town called Dunsborough in the south west of WA which is slap bang in the middle of the wine region. I was sent down here origionally by the guy who ran a job centre at my hostel in Perth along with 7 others to do some grape vine pruning and after a 3hr hung over bus journey from hell i arrived and my first impressions of the place were alot better than that last dump - there are people here and shops and they didn't appear to be inbred! There are two hostels here, one is 2km out of town and the one im at is in town and within walking distance of everything i need. The hostel owner drove us all to work the first week, the first job only lasted the one week and we did no pruning at all, we just walked around
The 3 Bears
I have drank many a beverage in there clipping a pipe to the wire and at the end of the week the lardy git claimed he had too many people working for him and would have to let some of us go - we found out on the way home that some meant all of us which wasn't great as it was decent money at $20 an hour, some people decided they would go back to Perth after that job but they had to hang around and wait for the pay check which they finally gave us 3 days later than promised, ever since the place has been fondly refered to as fat farm due to the size of the guy and because he was an c**t.
The hostel guy found us another pruning job but this was contract work and not hourly pay which sadly meant id have to actually put some effort into it if i wanted to make money, it has worked out ok so far and ive reached my goal for saving 3 weeks early. A good thing about this work is you can stop and start as much as you want during the day and if you want a day off for
whatever reason you just take it, the bad thing about the job is the weather which is strange at best at the moment, i think it rained almost every day in July so i had to go out and buy proper rain gear as the $3.99 poncho from the general store just didnt quite make the grade sadly. Im getting cheaper rent aswell because i drive some ppl to work in a little van the hostel guy bought as there is now quite a few people here to work. My record earnings for one days work was a magical $221 for 7 hours work and ive never come close to that since.
Dunsborough is a decent little place, as you arrive on the bus you pass quite alot of big expensive houses and its right on the coast with a nice beach which is popular for surfing which is a big thing round here, the weather hasnt really been suited to spending time on the beach as its winter at the moment although 'winter' daytime temperatures have never been lower than 17 degrees i don't think. The town has everything you need, 2 supermarkets, 2 bottle shops,a DVD rental
Red Moon...
Well thats what we wanted to see but it was cloudy that evening. place where you can rent 3 fairly recent fims for a mere $5.50 for a week, quite a few small independent shops selling various stuff and 3 drinking establishments, the main one is the 3 Bears pub which claims to be world famous for its live music and to be fair even though i'd never heard of it before arriving here it does seem to be a popular venue for alot of big Ozzie bands like The Beautifull Girls, Grinspoon and... others, people come from far and wide to see these bands and the pub is packed when a decent band is on but they sell out really quick though and i missed out on the Beautifull Girls who didn't turn up anyway so i was happy with that. But i think the best thing about this town was the pink playstation 2 one of the Korean guys bought who sadly left last week and took it with him - but i now understand the Pro Evoloution phenomenon and will kick some butt when im back.
I have 2 more weeks of work left after which i'll be able to come back in future and spend another year working
here if i ever want to (if you do 3 months seasonal work you can claim a 2nd visa as long as your under 30) after which im off to Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef and the sunshine... although right now Queensland is getting hammered by heavy rain and floods, but hopefully it'll be back to sunshine by the time i get there.
