Saturday August 11, 2007 It was really foggy in the morning. We decided to have a catch up day and I could do laundry so the weather didn’t bother us.
After lunch we went to the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center; another interactive type of museum on sea life, the saltwater and fresh water around Homer and the Aleutian Islands. Homer is the mainland contact place for the Aleutians. Ferries leave regularly for different islands. We were fortunate to hear a special speaker. A history teacher who lives at Dutch Harbor on Unalaska (one of the Aleutians) wrote a book about the Japanese bombing of Dutch Harbor in WWII. He had a power point presentation and it was very interesting. He was a good speaker and held our attention for one and a half hours. We didn’t realize Alaska was bombed and occupied in WWII.
The fog lifted in the afternoon and after dinner we took several long walks around wetlands looking for interesting birds, but didn’t have any luck. It was not a picture taking type of day.

Alaska and WWII
Doug's grandfather was a medic in the army in WWII and was stationed in Alaska for some time. He never saw any "action" while in Alaska, but had some interesting stories of his time there. He went to the European theatre too...after Alaska. We're enjoying reading about your travels and discoveries! It sounds like you are having a wonderful time! We're praying you'll continue to have a great time and enjoy each other! :) love you guys!
