!!GREAT ACHIEVEMENT!! I’ve now spent a full year in West Africa without a single case of amoebic dysentery, giardia, E. coli, or malaria! Hooray for my immune system.

I’m back in Ouaga for mid-service training. Sitting through sessions at the PC office is not too exciting but I’m enjoying the air conditioning and free food.

I had a couple of trainees come to Satiri for their site visit. Julia and Garrett will be the new teachers in Siby (near Boromo) and Sabou. They have been in Burkina for a couple of months now and finally got a break from training to visit their villages and see other volunteers. My village was really excited to have a couple of new toubabous around and cultural protocol required that I take them to meet anyone remotely important in the area. They endured it well.

Since Julia and Garrett had their bikes, we took a ride 22 km to the Mare aux Hippopatames, a lush green area past Bala where there is a national forest and a large lake that is home to around 60 hippos. During the dry season, when the lake is smaller, one can board a fishing boat and paddle out to see the giant creatures. This time of year it is more difficult, and the fishermen told us that all the hippos were “traveling” downriver a bit. But we enjoyed a ride around the lake in a sturdy metal boat that did not even require us to bail any water out. The bike ride through the forest was pleasant as well - shady, green, and scenic.

I finally found a solution to the mouse problem in my house: a ferocious hunting kitty. OK she is a little kitten that is mostly white with some black, grey, and brown. I’ve been calling her “Jaara” which means “lion.” Not very fitting because she is tiny and afraid of everything. But she’s really cute and has been keeping me entertained for the last few weeks.
