Shave and a haircut...1200 rupees
So while getting my hair cut the other day, I noticed that the barber
shop offered a shaving service. For some odd reason, I've always wanted
to have a straight razor shave. As I'm sitting there getting my hair
cut, I noticed that I had a three day growth (please reference
Jennifer's earlier posting that I took Friday off for her birthday).
Just for the record, I contend that a monsoon rain storm, rubies, and
great Thai food is a pretty good birthday, but the gauntlet has been
thrown down, and I will respond! Early favorites for next year's
birthday are: 1) Dog sledding in Antarctica, 2) Camel caravan across
the Gobi dessert, 3) Lunch/tea on top of Mt. Everest.
Back to my shave... My man Nazam asked if I was interested in the $20 scalp
massage. Despite a lot of the great things I've heard about this
service, I wasn't down with him rubbing oil on my head for 15 minutes.
But a shave, that would be great! BTW, the guy next to me took the
"scalp massage", and the next thing I know, three guys are working him
over...head, back, arms.
Nazam configures the chair to shave mode, and off we go. I won't give
you a play by play, but I was surprised how nervous I was with a guy
holding a razor by my throat. I also was surprised at the burning - I
have a new appreciation for my Mach 3. The hot and cold towel wraps at
the end were worth the price of admission, and the shave was without a
doubt the closest I've ever had. A pretty cool experience over all.
For my next adventure, I've noticed that guys will set up shaving stands
along the streets. A usual set up is a chair in front of a tree of
telephone pole with a small mirror stuck to the side. I'm betting it
costs a lot less than 600 rupees for a shave, but haven't quite
determined if the risk vs. reward is there.
