Hola,

I am happy to say that today was NOWHERE near as eventful as yesterday. I am curious to hear some more feedback as to what you thought about my experiences yesterday... the Amazonian animals and the "robbery."

So it is our last day here in Iquitos- tomorrow we leave for a weekend at the Rainforest Lodge. I am thinking I will not have access to internet for the weekend, so the next entry might not come until Sunday or Monday. I know, I know, what are you going to do all weekend without hearing what I am doing? I have faith that most of you will be okay. There are a few I am worried about... not mentioning anyone by name though!

Not too much to write about today (insert sigh of relief here) so here goes.

Hopped on the bus right from the hotel to go to FORMABIAP, or "El Programa de Formación de Maestros Bilingües de la Amazonía Peruano." This is an educational institute whose focus is on the educational needs of children, especially indigenous children in the Amazon, and to promote future awareness of the rights of such groups of people. You can visit the website for more information (in Spanish) - FORMABIAP

We took a tour of the school, which reminded me a lot of overnight camp (the students´dorms are like camp bunks) and then listened to a number of presentations on the program. Instead of heading back to the hotel after our visit, we stopped for lunch where we could choose chicken or fish. Vinny ordered the fish.. you can see why I did not eat any of it. Remember how I mentioned the stray dogs? Well, this adorable puppy was hanging around our table hoping for "fall out," along with a pregnant kitty. I snuck them some of my chicken. Hey, animals are different- they can´t learn to help themselves and change their lives like humans have the oppotunity to do.

They gave us ten minutes at the hotel to change and regroup, and then we walked to University for yet another presentation. If it seems like there are a lot of presentations, YOU ARE RIGHT! They are ALOT. Before we left the hotel, the little boy from last night showed up looking for money, and Kathy yelled at him for cursing (he was actually using the "f-word!"

Back to the hotel to pick up laundry and headed to the laundromat. Did I mention how we just drop off clothing to be washed and they do it all for you? Like a dry cleaners, but just regular wash and dry. I am running a little low on um, er, intimate apparel.

Natalie and I took a walk to the camera store where I attempted to find a back-up battery for my camera, but did not prevail. I did, however, transfer my first memory card onto a disc so now I have a back-up for the first 500 pictures I took since we got here.

We skipped dinner with the group tonight (well-needed break) and hit up an Italian restaurant on the other side of the plaza. I really missed pizza!!! We are planning to go to the pool at the Five Star Hotel El Dorado tonight.

Need to get some sleep tonight though- 3 hour boatride to the lodge tomorrow. Can´t forget the Dramamine!

Alyssa

You didn't mention anything about your bellyache today, so I guess you are feeling better (hope pizza was good). Love ya, Dad
