since i am from the bicol province.. i invited my office friends to visit bicol and stay at our place.. they arrived in albay in april 28, morning was rest time. since it was their first time to drive all the way to bicol with only a map on hand, they were travelling at a slow pace in order to get the right route. in the afternoon, the group decided to have some view of the recent typhoon Reming's aftermaths / destructions in Sto. Domingo, Albay.
we went to donsol in the morning of april 29. after 2 hours travel from albay to donsol, we finally reached the place.. since it was already 10am when we arrived, we had to wait for our turn.. first, you have to register at the counter (registration office) then watch a video on the do's and dont's of interacting with the butandings (whale sharks). "Do not touch the butanding" - that is the number 1 rule.
by 10:45am, the group together with the BIO (butanding interaction officer), the spotter, a navigator and a boatman went to the sea to look for the butanding, our spotter found it hard to look for one (although
donsol
super saya :) he is an expert one) because it was already late.. the butandings usually appear early in the morning to look for planktons (their food).. all the spotter has to do is to look for large shadows beneath the surface of the water and thats it..after waiting for 2 hours, we finally had our first encounter with the gentle giant and the long wait was worth it.. while waiting for the butanding to appear, we enjoyed ourselves by taking photos. 😊
after that, we dropped by at daraga church (our lady of the gate parish).
as we still had enough time to go swimming after we reached home, we headed to the nearby river and have some dip 😊 how fulfilling.
Notes:
the best months to go to donsol are from january to may when the butandings are known to stay in the area because of the abundance of plankton. Each encounter can be as brief as a few seconds or may take a full hour (thats according to the BIO).
boat rental is P3,500 with seven persons on board and P100 registration per person.
