I have been in Shanghai for a few days now and am enjoying it very much. It is a very modernised city and there are lost of places with information in English; although there are also lots of places with no Engliush as well.

Since I started travelling I have picked up a few tips from others and worked some out for myself, for example if you go to a restaurant and there are no english words on the menu, either go by the pictures or look at other peoples food for something good and point to it so they will get you that. When I got of the subway from shanghai train station I took pictures of the station name and road name in Chinese characters ten I could show it to other people if I get lost.

The train from Beijing to Shanghai was excelent. By the look of it, it was under a year old and the beds were very comftable. A local girl came and sat next to me and wanted to practice english. She could not speak very much but we managed to have a pretty good conversation with the help of a paper & pen and my phrase book. I found that she is travelling with her family, works in medicine, is here for 3 weeks, and lives in Beijing just arround the corner from the hostel was.

Before I came to Shanghai I was told that the people were rude, but i have found them to be just normal city folk and have had no problems at all.

Not that much to say at the moment but there will be in a few days when I vist some of the real Chinese towns/villages.

Have fun,
Jamie.

How do I choose?
Sarah, I haven't heard from you for ages. Please don't make me choose between you and lisa, I refuse to do it. In my last entry I said that I was going to meet Anna but we have missed each other unfortunatly so I will see her when I get back home. See you soon, Jamie
