Gorge lookout
Highest point on the trek Yeah this was the trek we had been looking forward to for a long time! Dali and Lijiang were both cool, well preserved old towns but now it was time to say bye to the temples and colorful costumes and see what northern Yunnan is famous for - kick arse mountains.
The gorge itself is a 25km trek through some of the most amazing scenery Kako and I had ever seen in our lives, and the bonus was we got the weather! On one side sits 5500m Yulong Xueshan, the mountain we rode to from Lijiang, and on the other side sits 5400m Haba shan. Add to this the Yellow river which slices through the two snow capped peaks some thousand metres below the trekking path, and cool $3 a nite Naxi guesthouses to stay at, and you get the picture. Or maybe just look at the pics!
After two days of hard arse hiking and awesome vistas we got on the bus and headed north again, and higher! On the bus ride to the limestone terraces of Baishuitai the scenery gradually changed from rocky brown inhospitable mountain scapes to lush green valleys filled with tiny villages thousands
of metres below. How these people live so far off the beaten track both inspired and amazed Kako and I, but this was only a taste of things to come. Was that a whiff of Tibet in the air...?
