Imperia and Munich were two of our favorite spots because neither was planned. It was like bonus footage on a DVD. You can't go wrong. Unlike Munich, which was all about good food, great beer, and friendly celebration. Imperia started as a beautiful train station on our way to Cinque Terre. It was one of our few day trains, which you should avoid since sleeper cars are more comfy and economical. The train stopped at Imperia for a half hour or so, and Chris and I got off to stretch our legs. The station was beautiful and old. The town was nestled against the Med Sea, and what we could see looked perfectly quaint. On a whim, on of us said, "Why don't we stop here for the night?" I can't remember whose idea it was; but regardless, we grabbed our packs and let the train leave us behind.
In town, we found the cutest little guest house. Imperia is a fishing/tourist town, but most of the tourist appear to be Italian. No on spoke English, and that was fine with us. The dining room at the guest house was about the size of a small restraunt with lots
of small tables. The odd (but cool) thing was that each table "belonged" to a family for their stay. For example, I could purchase a bottle of red wine at lunch, drink half, and leave the bottle on the table. At dinner, the bottle would be waiting for me untouched. It was really cool.
The only room available had one queen size bed that Chris and I shared. Guys never like sleeping in the same bed, but who cares. We were traveling, and imperfect lodging adds to the adventure. The bathroom, while clean, was quite old and almost an adventure in itself.
