Nimbin.....let's see......Nimbin.....how to describe Nimbin........OK, picture Amsterdam but take away the buildings, waterways, red light district, nightclubs, hedonism, showers/sanitation/anything remotely clean and what are you left with??? You got it - pot.

Nimbin is a wide spot in the road that hosted a hippy festival 30 years ago and I guess some people were too stoned to remember how to get home, so they just stayed. Today it exists for just two reasons: 1) to allow hippies/hobos to sleep in the streets while "championing" the great cause of legalizing marijuana use through their "creation" of "art" (i.e. getting stoned and fiddling with the garbage that cannot be removed from the town and putting a bunch of pro-weed slogans on t-shirts); and 2) to sell pot to tourists. So naturally I went.

This town looks like it was created by Walt Disney, it's so over the top, or it belongs as a Vegas sideshow. But it actually is a real town, with people that actually live there. Basically, every single store or establishment is either a place to buy weed or smoke it. As you walk around in a redeyed, foggy haze the town explodes in a kaleidescope of color and sound, completing the illusion, until you realize it's just 1 block long with nothing else around it. The Nimbin museum (and I use the term 'museum' veeerrry loosely here) is particularly interesting after a fat one and you can begin to decipher the paintings depicting the freedom of aboriginal life - I did not see any pictures of them smoking DMT to communicate with their ancestors - mixed with contemporary politics and philosophical ramblings in motif that can only be described as Early Der Licht. After about 2 hours and 9 trips up the street and back, reading almost every piece of writing in town, I realized 2 things: First, always buy from the old lady, not the young shark. The old lady's been making her space cakes for years and just cares about sharing her creation with the world to help set it free. She's very friendly. And second.....wait, what was I talking about? Oh, nevermind.
