Since our last message we crossed the Peruvian border, and now find ourselves on the shores of the Amazon River in the jungle town of Iquitos. We have thoroughly enjoyed the past week, and have gained an enormous respect for the diversity of this region. We began our journey in the high Andes with glaciated peaks, moved down through cloud-forest to dry palm lined beaches, spent a night in the desert, and we are now in one of the most wet and lush environments on the planet. Everyone that we've met so far has been very pleasant, and our communication attempts are improving every day. Unfortunately while we were on the coast, I (Paul) was a little too indiscriminate with my choice in seafood and as a result have been tethered to the nearest toilet for the last 2 days. It hasn't really effected our plans and I was able to get some antibiotics at the airport yesterday in Lima, hopefully it will all be over tomorrow.
We left Riobamba, Ecuador the morning after our last entry. It was a very long day of bus travel with a hectic border crossing sandwiched in the middle. When we reached
Fresh Water
William shows me how to find fresh water in the jungle. our destination, the 12 hours of travel proved to be a very small price to pay for such an incredible location. Mancora truly felt like home. It is a small little surf town in northern Peru with a handful of hotels, restaurants, artisan stands, and cevicherias (most likely the cause of my present condition). We spent 4 days in Mancora at an incredible beachfront hotel located right in front of the town's main surf break. Our room was right on the beach, complete with hammocks and shade from palm trees. We spent our time swimming, lounging in the sun, and watching the local surfers & kite surfers. If it weren't for all the other places that we wanted to reach on this trip, we could have very easily spent the rest of our vacation on that very beach.
We left Mancora on the 25th and spent the night at a very upscale hotel in Chiclayo, a busy desert town which didn't have much for us other than it's airport. We flew out the morning of the 26th to Lima (Peru's capital) and eventually caught a connecting flight to Iquitos in the afternoon. It is ridiculously hot here, but luckily
we found a hotel with air conditioning. This city's only contact with the outside world is by airplane or boat, it's pretty incredible that they have the infrastructure they do. Today we planned to take a trip into the jungle by boat, but unfortunately I had to opt out at the last moment. Silver went nonetheless and seemed to have a wonderful time.
Once again there are quite a few photos for you to view...
****Update 4/28 Paul survived his case of chronic mud butt... yeah
