Breakfast - Rebecca, Sarita, Me, Rich
This place looked really fancy, but it was in the sun. It was good breakfast, but wouldnt recommend an iced coffee - it literally is a normal black coffee with ice.... So i have finally gotten around to a bit of travelling. Amanda, as a teacher, had two weeks off and was off to do a tour and then a few days in Vienna, and asked if i wanted to meet up with her seen as it was the weekend. Jumped at the chance and as a result got to see two cities in 4 days. Managed to get cheap as flights, £85 return to Bratislava (which is the capital of Slovakia) and caught the bus for a 90min journey to Vienna. We got dropped off on some deserted street at 1230am. It was completely dead - no cars, shops or houses. There was no sign of a Taxi stand, as it turns out there was a train station across the road, but couldnt tell what station it was, there was nobody inside either, so took a punt at reading the german signs and bought tickets, forgot to validate them but all good, caught the train and travelled 15mins to the station we wanted, Westbanhof, got off and walked the wrong way, eventually we got to the hostel at bout 130am. It was just as well Rich came with me otherwise
Mosaic
A Mosaic of Plastic Shopping Bags on a corner of a street i wouldve had a little bit of a mare, working out where i was, try and translate german, negotiate the trains, walk down the main drag of Vienna in the middle of the night in the wrong direction, and then find the hostel which was down some back streets. Eventful start to 4 days off.
The next day we met Amanda and her travel buddy Sarita and another kiwi girl they had met the night before in the hostel bar. We went for a walk down the main street, caught a tram at the bottom and did a loop of the main sights, walked to find this Market, which was awesome, loads of fruit - dried and fresh, seeds and spices, bread, juices, olives, meat and seafood. Amazing and lunch consisted of picking on bits and pieces from the markets. Went and found the St Stephens Cathedral, very very cool and the scultures and architecture was breathtaking. It must of taken years to sculpt all the statues inside and the outside is still under construction, there has always been some construction of some sort since the day it started to be built in 1160's, At the moment the steeple has
The Market Square
The Cafe area of the Market still got scaffloding around it.
Walked around a bit, down little wee streets, past all the major designer shops, stopped for ice cream - oh my gosh amazing ice cream!!! Found the Opera House, thought it might be a good idea to go to the Opera, bought some tickets of a tout and managed to score seats in the box, pretty cool but cant see a heck of a lot, but then not much was missed, couldnt understand anything, but it was worth it to see the inside of the building and now i can say i have seen an Opera (even though i fell asleep in the middle) and i did something cultural in Vienna.
The next day sent Sarita on her way back to Budapest to fly back to London, and the rest of us went for a wee walk along the river. Very pretty, and while heading towards a ferris wheel we came upon an actual Carnival. It was free to enter and walk around and you only paid for the rides you went on. A couple of rides we did go on. Good Fun!! Found a little bar that looked like it was on
The Veges
Some of the Vegetables at the Market the beach very cool, felt like we were on the beach. Had a coke and mossied our way back to the hostel to catch a train to Bratislava for a couple of days.......
