Cape Tribulation - Day 34, 35 & 36

Cape Tribulation is home to the oldest rainforest in the world. Our bus trip up to "Cape Trib" took about four hours along some fantastic coastal road and across the Daintree River. We made a few stops along the way to check out some of the flora and fauna. This included a stop at a cool little animal park/zoo where saw some crocodiles, large pythons, and met our first cassowary. The cassowary is a huge bird similar to an ostrich or emu however it has this weird mohawkish headpiece and a huge talon on its foot. Watch out! They look nice but they can get you! Looking back, the bus trip to Cape Trib was really more of a four hour disclaimer... Coming into contact with almost everything up here could get you air vac'd to the Cairns Hospital. Stay out of the ocean, the rivers, watch out for spiders, snakes, killer birds, and plants shaped like hearts with jagged edges and you'll be ok... Needless to say we were pretty freaked out exploring our surroundings.

The highlight of our Cape Trib experience was hands down the exotic fruit tasting held by a local fruit farm. By the way - there are only 40 land owning residents in Cape Trib, one of which was our fruit tasting host. A few of the fruits in season where rambutans, jakfruits, mamey sapotes, and soursops. They were all very tasty!

On the way back down to Cairns we went on a boat trip in croc territory. We only saw one crocodile - but he was enough. He was a regular in the area and our tour guide called him Fat Albert. He was at least 13 feet long and he was big! Keep your hands and arms inside the boat!!!
