After some problems with our car, aka the car was supposedly in sub zero degree temperature and had "glacial frost" on the engine which cracked the engine and somehow caused the car to over heat? therefore it needs a new engine and in the shop for the week, sad. But we managed to make it to Glenochey with some of my other friends. Wednesday night we picked up Anne and Sean (her boyfriend) and sarah in Queenstown where they had been ditching classes for the beginning of the week and we drove up to Glochecky and stayed at a hostel which we had major troubles finding in the dark. In the morning we woke up early and caught a bus to the Routeburn trail head. The Routeburn is one of the "Great Walks" of NZ and is supposedly the second prettiest hike in the South Island and after finishing it I would definitely agree even though I only have two other "Great Walks" to compare it to. The first day felt like I was in Lord of the Rings... we were hiking alongside tons of waterfalls with huge snow covered mountains surrounding us. The second day we really bad weather though and it rained the entire day. We were pretty much soaked through the entire time and some of the hike got a little dangerous. It was very muddy and slippery and for about an hour we were climbing straight up the mountain using tree roots as hand and foot holds. Sara got her foot stuck and took a face plant on a root which gave her a nasty bump and my friend O'Brien had really bad problems with her foot so she did the entire hike in crocks- so eventhough it sounds like intense hiking it wasn't that bad because she made it. Thank goodness the third day the weather cleared up and it was sunny as we hiked out the last 5 hours to the bus that took us back to the start where our car was. It was such a great trip and we were even back in time to go out on Saturday night! anyway, check out the pics cause its too hard to explain how pretty it was and the pictures don't even capture it all but they do a good enough job. cheers!
