Berlin in the RainBerlin in the RainBerlin in the Rain

Given my roasting in Spain, I probably should have been thankful for the downpour, but did it have to be so cold in July?
The day started out with pouring rain, so I was quite thankful that most of Berlin's major museums are rather tightly packed on Museuminsl (literally museum island). I did make the blunder of mistaking the national gallery for Pergammon Museum, and wound up in line for close to 3 hours for the wrong museum! I did get to see what all the fuss was about though: special Goya exhibit, which was quite interesting. The guy had incredibly disparate facets - his portraits and tapestries are a world away from his politically motivated drawings, which show a very active and darkly twisted imagination.

My blunder did land me in line with Alexandra though, a local student studying medicine. With someone to talk to, the lineup wasn't so bad. I did finally end up in Pergammon Museum, which was free when I got there. I didn't have long, and was pretty museum'd out after the national gallery. I thus made my visit short.

The evening was just entirely consumed by a pub crawl. We hit a total of 5 places, most pretty decent. The beer was cheap at all of them, and I tried out a new concation that's essentially beer

Holding three great gates/facades (one Greek, one Roman and one Babylonian), the place was quite a steal with free admission.
mixed with raspberry syrup. Not bad actually. Made a lot of new friends, so the night's been pretty good overall. I'm kinda wondering how I'm going to made the 11am bike tour tomorrow morning though...

I'm pretty clueless about Babylonian architecture, but it looked quite impressive (so large that I couldn't get a full shot) and colourful too.

Ignorant security guards
I hated the pergammon museum. The security guards follow you around in case you touch any of the statues. Which are already broken and very badly damaged from years of previous neglect, also probably damaged in transit from their original sites. If you take a picture of the ishtar gate or the alter they are rushing at you to stop. The camera technology today must be amazing that it can damage solid rock? The most uninviting horrible museum in the world. Berlin is a great place, just stay away from this dump.
