Not to be critical, but the office building where we went to have our visas extended looks like they filmed part of "12 Monkeys" there. This is probably mostly due to my cranky mood, but it does make one a little anxious to leave ones passport there for a week...

The look of the building was honestly a little suprising, the rest of Cape Coast is open and sunny and friendly. If I had been feeling better I would have gone to the market with Johana and Anna after we finished at the immigration office. The market is refered to as "the women's market" or "the walled market" and is an experiance in itself. Cars have the right of way here, so walking on the street is a little unnerving at times, but once you duck into the women's market, things quiet down. You have to dodge women and girls with huge bowls or wooden platters of tomatos or crabs or fish blanced on their heads, but mostly you just wander. It's a great place to find a huge variety of the amazing cloth as well as fresh produce and meat- sometimes so fresh it's still alive!
The first time we went with Mary. While I was negotiating the price of a mango, an old woman from another stall came over and re-fastened a button on my shirt that had come undone. The other women laughed when I blushed, but it was alright. It's a safe place for me.

you'll get your passport back ... in time ...
I am glad to read your journal. I love your descriptions and pictures -- makes me feel nostalgic. I remember washing all my laundry in a bucket, and buying tomatoes and "garden eggs" in the market, and looking at the beautiful batiks, and watching the goats wandering all over the place. The passport workers took an awful long time with my passport and I had to creat quite a scene to get it back in time to travel out of the county. Oh! Good luck and have fun!
