Well the first week of classes has gone well, despite the fact I had to attend them. The profs here are great, very laid back and seem to genuinely enjoy teaching much like the ones we have in Geneseo. My marine bio teacher is the New Zealand look-a-like of Patti Kimball. I am also taking Spanish and an intro sociology class called “Exploring Society”. I shouldn’t complain about having to go to classes, I actually have very few hours of class a week and so far they seem to be much less rigorous than Geneseo. The largest difference is that all of our grades, or assessments as they call them here, are essays and papers. I have yet to hear of any multiple choice tests or quizzes. There is also a great gym here and they have heaps of great classes to take. This week I’ve done yoga, pump (like cardio weightlifting), BAT (butt, abs, and thighs), and my personal favorite NRG, which is like a cardio dance routine thing. I probably look like a giraffe on ice attempting to do the moves, but I had fun so I don’t really care : ) I also joined the Tramping Club (hiking club) and EnSoc which is the engineering society. I know that sounds very strange seeing as how I am not an engineering major, or even remotely interested in it. Explanation- instead of having frats and sororities they have social groups centered around the popular majors on campus. EnSoc is the largest one and therefore has the best parties and trips. I'm sure they also so engineering-oriented things...but that's neither here nor there. So I got a tee shirt and a discount card for Tui which is a popular beer here. Yay engineering!
Thursday night a bunch of us went into town and stopped at two really cool Irish bars. The first one (Sullivan’s) was pretty small and quiet and had a pretty decent cover band playing. The second one (Mickey Finns? maybe...) was much larger and had lots of pool tables as well as a live band. It was a nice night; we all had fun and avoided the overcrowded club scene which made me happy. Tonight (Friday) we went out to get pizza at Hell again, which was once again delish. We went to the mall for a while and got ice cream and saw Music and Lyrics. Typical American Friday night on the other side of the world right? Though there was a difference in the movie theater-this one had a bar. You could enjoy an entire bottle of wine during your cinematic experience. I stuck with my diet coke. We’re going to Akaroa tomorrow…but that deserves it’s own entry, so cheers for now. And apologies for the lack of pictures...class doesn't provide too many photo ops.
