I flew from Cairns down to Adelaide to visit my friend Phil Deacon. I hadnt seen him in almost a year as he is studying med school down in Oz at Flinders Uni. It was during my week stay with him that it hit me, that most people actually have daily lives with lots of responsibility. Deacon is definetly no exception. This man accomplishes more by 10am than most do in a full day. He was voted president of his med school program by his peers last year, which is a huge responsibility and also finds time to socialize more than most and maintains grades that are at the top of his class. Most of my evenings in Adelaide, we would stay up late watching TV and talking out on his back porch until about 1 am, then go to bed. He would then wake up the next morning at around 6 am and study untill about 7:45, then wake me up and we'd eat breakfast together. Then he and his roomate Dyl would head off to go and learn how to save lives. Me? I would usually go back to bed for a couple more hours, wake up and then
get caught up on my 24 episodes that I've missed or watch whatever North American sport was on TV at the time. (this is a good opportunity to recognize Deacon's housemate Dyl, who is the most Tech savy person that I've ever met. The man records all sorts of tv shows such as 24, the office, scrubs etc..from his computer, which is connected to another computer in the living room, which is connected to the Television. He also has a program that allows you to watch North American TV live...simply put, the man is a genious).
By the way, I almost regret watching the first 6 episodes of 24, because this season looks to be one of the best of all time. I always love watching the first few episodes to see what washed up B movie caliber actors are cast on the show. Last year it was Rudy, this year its Kumar (from Harold and Kumar go to White Castle). That movie is 4 years old and Kumar was playing a University Student and is now somehow cast as a adolescent high school student?.....I also enjoy the FBI agent who was on Good Will Hunting, and was made
to look like the biggest fool ever. He was from the scene where Will and the boys go to the Harvard bar and Will tells him that he's unoriginal and then at the end of the night he sees him at the cafe and runs the line, "do you like apples?"...to which the preppy boy replies "yea, I like apples" ..."well I got her (Minnie Driver) number!!! How do you like them apples?!!!?"...I wonder how often he gets that from his friends back home after the bar, or even playing Xbox. I'm sure that Jack Bauer gets on his case with that line everytime he screws up one of his lines.
Deacon has a great collection of friends (one of whom was my 1st year frosh rep...small world) and this gave me the opportunity to actually meet some Aussies. On the Saturday in Adelaide, we spent the whole day at the beach, playing catch in the water and Deacon giving free lessons in beach volleyball. It was here that I was introduced to one Aussie. He said his name was "Jez", to which I replied, "oh thats a cool name, whats it short for?"....his response was "Jeremy". Huh? Thats
The Doctors Game
These are a few of Deacons great friends. But lets hope they're bettter doctors than they are poker players...luckily Jenna wasnt at this game...she took down the big game for $160. interesting, because my name is also Jeremy, but for some reason people just call me Jer for short....crazy. All Aussies seem to like to shorten all of their names and words and end them with a Z. Its like they dont have time to complete entire sentences. Anyways, from now on, I have added a The infront of my name and am being called, THE JEZ.
Scotty and Jenna also made it to Adelaide for the last few nights of my stay. They had just bought a used car for $500 and sucessfully drove it from Sydney along the great ocean road. Their car doesnt have the best shocks and doesnt have Aircon. Infact in order to prevent the engine from overheating they have to turn on the heat. This is strange, especially considering the air temperature was about 40 degrees with the humidity. To cool down, we thought it would be a good idea to roll down the windows. However, the heat was so much, that the wind was so hot that it felt like you were putting your face underneath a dryer in a washroom.
Together we had many great dinners, including kangaroo mixed with numerous different prawns. The dinners were more of a compliment to the wines that we were trying. The area around Adelaide is home to many of Australias finest wineries and we were happy consumers of wines from McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, the Barossa Valley and others. I can see Scotty quickly becoming a wine connoisseur.
I did many things in Adelaide, checked out a museum that had a gallery dedicated to Da Vinci's invention. It was here that I realized, that he invented just about everything that we use today...minus the computer. I also spent a day going to school with Deacon and felt important because he knows EVERYONE on campus...or atleast says hi to all of them.
My other days were spent making breakfast for Deac and Dyl and then cleaning up the house for them upon their return to earn my keep.
It was great seeing Deac, Scott and Jenna again and I thank Deac and Dyl for their incredible hospitality and I also hope that Canada is lucky enough to have them return to begin their practices.

No worries buddy
Thanks for coming to De-layed buddy, what a good time... Altough, if we were allowed to choose our own nicknames then we'd all be 'The Jez'... It was great to see you and be able to spend a few days chillin like old times in the Hammer... Hope the rest of your trip goes well and wish you all the best with your travels... I think it's amazing that you're taking the time to get out and see the world (pretty jealous of all the chillin/relaxing in the sun too....). Well, back to work for this cat - talk to you soon cheers buddy, Deacs ps - hit me up with a trade offer in the pool - Thornton is very much available...
