All You Can Eat Buffet
TASTY! we should have done it after the cooking course though! We arrived in Chiang Mai after catching a 14hr sleeper train from Bangkok - a much better experience than we anticipated. The first class air-conditioned tickets were sold out, so we got second class seats which consisted of one carriage, 20 bunk beds in two rows, a fan and 38 other passengers. This turned out to be a much more comfortable ride than first class, as we found out that the air conditioning stayed on all night, so everyone that paid more, froze... suckers! our carriage was extremely clean, comfortable and secure, with guards patroling throughout the night, so we were rapt.
After waiting for us to eat, the tuk tuk driver took us to her guesthouse to inspect it and we ended up getting accomodation there. It is really cheap for accomodation in chiang mai as the guesthouses rely on clients to book one of the many activities chiang mai province has to offer. Because of this however, we were not welcome back after we booked to go on the exact same three day trek for 600 baht less at the travel agents 3 doors down.
A lovely girl working here gave us heaps of information about the

Yeah it Actually looks good huh! Thats right I can cook local activities, cheapest markets, a map full of scribbled down directions and prices and the addresses of the best pad thai dish and buffet restaurant in chiang mai which we eagerly went to that night: It took a while finding it, and crossing the street was a challenge, but we arrived and were excited to stuff our faces! On arrival, the restaurant looked normal, with tables and chairs spread accross the room, a silver bench in the middle with the self serve food... unfortunately for us though, it was self-cook as well! all of the food was raw and you needed to collect what you wanted, take it to your table and cook it on a little metel burner/boiler. We did pretty well eating seafood/meat soup and noodles and towards the end found a little section with some pre-cooked curries and satay sticks. We had lots of fruit and some tasty thai desserts to finish.
Thinking we could have performed better at the do-it-yourself meal, we booked a cooking course for our second day which was a lot of fun. We started with a tour of the food market in the morning and then off we went to cook!
It was a small group of people, we had a wok each and chose our own 6 dishes that we cooked, and ate, throughout the day. We were given a recipe book each, but don't expect us to re-create these meals back home.
After this we set out for our first Muay Thai boxing experience, after deeming kickboxing in bangkok too expensive. We walked to the venue on the other side of town and stopped at the night market along the way, making us late... once there we got some/heaps of fried chicken, a coke, and headed in. We were sitting ringside so we got to see the adults, and miniture fighters (like 8 years old!!) kicking the crap out of eachother. It's so wrong seeing little kids fight full on, their muscles arent even developed yet! but it was worse seeing the coaches screaming at the kids in the corner.. it showed that it wasnt just a fun sport for the kids, they had bets placed on them. We saw them leave the ring limping, bruised up and one was concussed... still, alot of fun to see real muay thai fighting!
