After traveling alone, imagine my joy when I am reunited with DK! Yayyyy!!! When we see each other at the arrival gate in Bangkok, it's like a movie scene: lots of smiling, hugging and muah muah muah! DK's first words were, "It's been a while." It sure had!
SINGAPORE
From Bangkok, we jumped on a flight to Singapore and I talked for the entire 6 hour-flight. When we got into town, I am floored when I see our hotel room, I mean, it had an actual bathtub and I could use the water from the faucet to brush my teeth! We went out for dinner to this trendy area and I was surprised to see some jay walking and occasional littering. Ingrained in my mind were Singapore's strict laws (death penalty for drug possession, caning for vandalism, going to jail for being racist, etc), so I expected things to be picture perfect. FYI: DK and I jay-walked (we're gangsta!) and nothing happened. Not even a caning or a night in jail!
BALI
We left the following evening for Bali, Indonesia. For the first three nights, we stayed at
Ramada Resort in Benoa which was absolutely gorgeous. Everything about the resort itself had
a tropical feel to it, with lots of trees and greenery. At the pool, there were cabanas and a pool bar.
That evening, we had dinner at Jimbaran, a seafood market, that has dozens of beachfront seafood restaurants. Each establishment had tables set up in the sand, so diners could enjoy the ocean and crashing waves. The food was fantastic as well-- lobster, crabs, red snapper... Amazing!
The second day, we slept in, swam, ate delicious traditional Balinese meal and just c-h-i-l-l-e-d out. On our third day, we went snorkeling in the ocean and DK and I fed crackers to the fishes, so they would come play with us. I had great fun doing that, except for the fact that I was getting attacked by these tiny, transparent jellyfishes. Arugh! Later on, we went to "Turtle Island" and saw some animals. That night, we took a cab out to Kuta, a heavily-tourist area, but not so much now following the bombings. Still, I felt like I was back in California, as there were a slew of McDs, Billabong, Starbucks, etc. We scouted out a cute little joint and spent the rest of our night there.
On our
Batman!
He's not the only one who was surprised! forth day, we checked into
Aston Resort in Benoa, which was ABSOLUTELY stunning. It has a humongous pool with a waterfall and volleyball court, and beyond the pool lies the resort’s own private beach.
We laid out for a while and at night, DK took me to this spiffy restaurant in Seminyak called
Ku De Ta. The restaurant's ambiance and price made me feel like I was back in LA. It was weird spending so much on food when everything else on the whole island was so cheap. Plus, it seemed too much like a "who's who" kind of a place. Although the interior and service was fabulous, I was not impressed by the food or the drinks. B-u-t, the outdoor lounge that looks right out into the crashing waves made it exceptional. Its worth it to go for just that; and it’ll be a double whammy if you make it for the sunset.
The next day, DK and I roasted under the sun. We took full advantage of the resort’s amenities and plopped ourselves on the beach. It was fun at that moment (before the burning and peeling happened later) and it was blissful! I saw my first topless sunbather! DK wasn't
Ubut tour at an art gallery
where DK hit a homerun with the negotiation too impressed as she was probably in her late 50s.
We were being so silly and occasionally, we would pull an ugly Asian behavior, like talking in Korean really loud. HAHAHahaha! At least we weren't speaking in Chinese (no offense Carl!). DK kept accusing me of being an ugly Asian tourist but I really think it was the sun and Bintang getting to me. That night, we went to Kuta and went shopping, shopping, shopping! Actually, I did and DK was being a good sport. Around this time, we started feeling the wrath of our “fun in the sun.” By the time we got back to our rooms, we could barely move from the stinging! I have a legit excuse for getting burned: I fell asleep, and supposedly, DK tried to wake me up numerous times. But DK, hahahhaa, got burned because he was
jealousof my tan!! AHhahahaa. I tan easily, so I was already tanned by mid-afternoon. When we were at the beach, I asked him if he wanted to swim with me. He took one look at my tanned body, thought, "Shit, I need to get tanned like her,” and proceeded to bake in the sun. Hahahaa
he's so funny.
Our last day at Bali was spent doing an Ubut tour. Our friends who had been to Bali months before, recommended a driver to use for the tour. Ubut is the artsy part of Bali, with hundreds of studios and galleries of paintings, woodcarvings, stone carvings, jewelry and hand-weaved clothing. We ended up buying a lot of things like rings, woodcarvings and a gorgeous painting. Being the super negotiator that he is, DK was able to bring down the painting price from $400 to $120. Actually, everything we bought in Ubut was for at least 60% cheaper than the listed price. Normally, you can get it down to 40% but DK hustled them all--even our driver was impressed. At the end of our tour, we went to Monkey Temple and we saw a two monkeys getting it on! XXX! Cheers to PDA!
That night, we bid adieu to lovely Bali and boarded a flight to Singapore. We met up with some friends that night, who just returned from Phuket. We gave them their gift: a wooden penis ashtray that we bought in Ubut. Hahahaa.
