To Big Bend

On Wednesday, January 3rd, we left the Burgh and drove south; first to Charlotte, NC to visit the kids and grandkids, then on to Boone, NC for a visit with Heidi and Adrian. They are doing well and the “fixer-upper” is being transformed into a warm, lovely home. On a warm sunny day, we enjoyed a nice hike just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Our trek to the west began on Sunday, Tennessee is one long state. The rain and fog made it seem longer. In Arkansas, we spent the night in Alma, the Spinach Capital of the World. Kel had her picture taken with her Hero, Popeye! The RV needed some work in Tulsa, and we managed a pleasant walk along the Arkansas River on Riverside Trail. After spending time with Gail and John, old friends, the guys enjoyed an Oklahoma meal of Chicken Fried Steak and all the “fixins”. Our last stop in OK was Lake Murray State Park (SP). Quite a large lake/park with a good walking trail, that we took advantage of. There are very few tourists this time of year, so we had the place to ourselves.
We are now in Texas and still have a lot of driving ahead of us. Another SP last night, Lake Colorado, TX, and again another neat trail for us. A long walk after a day of driving helps the stiff bones ease up.
Monahans Sandhills SP was an AM stop. Seems people rent discs and go sand surfing down the dunes, not quite as fun as snow. Fort Stockton is our last stop before the final trek to Big Bend (BB). Since we will be dry-camping at BB, this is our opportunity to shop, do laundry, and in general get prepared.
