03/12/06 - 04/12/06 Whitsunday Islands

I have to start this entry with Sunday night’s meal at Airlee Beach and mention the Divine Fish Bar and Divine Rum Bar in the mall next to Airlee Waterfront Backpackers. The blueberry mojitos and beer battered mackerel and chips was simply Divine. Probably the best fish meals on the planet!

We decided it was time to splash out and treat ourselves to a couple of luxury experiences! After all it was a Monday morning and everyone hates Monday mornings!! ;-)

We started the day with a 10 am two and a half hour champagne picnic on Whitehaven beach by seaplane. Whitehaven beach has 98% pure silica sand and is beautifully white. You can use handfuls of the wet sand to polish silver jewelry. We polished Jen’s earrings, anklet and necklace and they all came up sparkling. The sand also makes a squeaky noise under your feet if you walk on it a certain way. I was definitely a candidate for the ministry of funny walks trying to achieve the squeaky sound by stomping down in the sand with each step.

in order to swim and the guy was wearing budgie smugglers (Australian for Speedo style swimwear) branded Spank, right across the bum. We were in hysterics and just had to get a photo!

The seaplane ride was fantastic and it was an exhilarating experience landing and taking off on water, and much smoother then I expected. The water around the islands was a multitude of different shades of blue and turquoise.

Continuing our ‘splashing out’ Monday, we headed over to Peppers Palm Bay Resort on Long Island for a night in a sea view cabin. In the evening we sipped some more sparkling on our decking and watched the wallabies hopping around the grounds. I even found the time to swing on a hammock and read through ‘Luxury Travel’ magazine.

We left the beautiful Whitsundays, having visited just 2 of the 74 islands and carried on south once more. Next stop - platypus country.
