Coffs Harbour
View of the harbour. My first stop after i left Sydney was good old Coffs Harbour which is further up the east coast and took about 8 hours to reach on the train, the train felt really slow but when i spoke to people who did the same journey on the bus it turned out to be pretty much the same.
I chose Coffs Harbour only because it was the first place i had heard of, it was a nice little town and the weather was good while i was there, it felt really small after Sydney but also a nice change. As it happened the night i arrived at the Aussietel hostel it was punch night! They had a huge drum thing holding loads of punch and you just kept on filling your mug up again and again, and they jus kept on filling the thing up again and again, to cut along story short we (15 of us) finally finished it and headed of into town - which i cant really remember. There was also a big boat race thing happening on the beach with teams from loads of different beaches one day, also there was a creek that you could paddle up
Coffs Harbour
Loads of boats all down the beach, they seemed to be taking it pretty seriously too. in a boat which i never got round to and some botanical gardens which were dull, but i enjoyed my time there.
Next stop was Byron Bay and as we arrived at night you could see the lighthouse doing its thing above the town which was cool. When i got there it was 'schoolies' which is basically when all the 18 year olds from Sydney and other places who have just finished school come up to Byron and Surfers Paradise and get shit faced, and they were a bunch of annoying thieving little gits - bought myself a 6 pack of the cheapest beer i could find, had one went back for another to find they had all vanished!! Turns out i wasn't the first person to have been burgled either. No chance of tracking down the little f**ker either because there were to many of them to question. I did manage a walk upto the lighthose one day which was a nice long walk. ASo despite the place being over run with tossers i liked Byron alot and will hopefully return when its back to normal someday, there wasn't alot to see except the lighthouse and some beaches
but its a nice little town.
From Byron i went back down the coast a few hours to Port McQuarie, when i got there i thought i'd arrived in a ghost town as there wasn't a sole on the streets, went back to the hostel with another 6 pack of even cheaper beer this time ($9.99) called Amsterdam i think and sat drinking with people at the hostel, we all went to a kareoke night later on and even though nobody actually sang it was a good night out. Had a wander around some more beaches, one had red water because it was full of some weed or something and had a look at another lighthouse... i didnt want to but the people i was with did, we also went to some rainforest walk thing but if that was a rainforest im a garden gnome. Wasn't to fond of this place, reminded me of some rubbish british resort like Bognor or somewhere.
From there it was back down to Sydney, the train to Canberra didn't leave untill 12.30 the next day so i had to book another night there and the only bed i could find when i
Byron Bay
The Lighthjouse rang around before hand was $35 - not good, although the Railway Square YHA was a really nice hostel.
The train to Canberra took about 4 and a half hours, its not the most exciting place on earth but certainly better than Port McQuarie. My first day here i spent sorting out my accomodation for the festive period in Melbourne, cleaning out my bag and washing clothes. Yesterday i did the tourist thing and checked out the War Memorial which to be honest was really good, they had lots of tanks and artillery that actually fought in WW2 and WW1 and a Japanese submarine that was one of 3 to try attack Sydney harbour, its pretty much intact apart from the huge hole that the depth charge ripped in the forward section of its hull, i could have spent longer there but didn't have time. Walked down to parliment house, walked into parliment house, realised i couldn't give a rats ass about politics never mind Australian politic and walked back out within 5 minutes. From there i went to the National Museam of Australia which was again better than expected with a 3d movie thing where you designed a

Never get sick of seeing these! house or something and you then got to see it in a small cinema with your face next to it, and a rotating cinema thing all about Australia. When i say better than expected it still only held my attention for about an hour and a half. And today i was meant to go to a small town called Albury on the border of NSW and Victoria untill i rang up the hostel to be told it no longer exists and the nearest one is 5km out of town, so i cancelled the ticket booked another straight to Melbourne and stayed here another day. Thank god i have unlimited travel or that would have been a costly mistake, anyway that runs out on Thursday so i'll be in Melbourne for a while, untill after the 24th of January anyway as i have tickets to the tennis quarter finals then.
Cya!
