After Yesterday, the Killing Fields and S21, me and chris fancied a game of football. We had gone past the Olympic Stadium on the way home and both of us said it would be a laugh if we could play on the pitch. Once we got back we had a word with the guy at the guesthouse and he said you can play on the pitch! So we bought ourselves a new ball (My Nike T90 Swift was donated to an orphanage) the Cambodian away kit (fake of course) and Me, Chris and Jared headed there. As soon as we got there we could see that a lot of people were playing the beautiful game around the ground, but could we get on the Hallowed turf of the national Stadium of Cambodia?
Well yes, actually. There was a group of guys on the pitch and we asked them if we could play, they said yes, Jared and Chris were on one side, me on the other. We played for about an hour and a half in USA 94 conditions, I was purple by the end of the first half. I was unfortnately on the losing side in a 5-4 thriller although I scored two, the first a looping header over the keeper and the second and low drive into the left corner. I would have had a trick of hat if My curling right footer had gone in the top corner instead of 6 inches over. Bugger.
The pitch I was told was the best in Cambodia, although I'd have to say at best it was West Heath Park. About 3000 people were watching, well doing Tai Chi around the ground so thats another record for me. The capacity of the ground is 60,000 so that beats my last stadium I played in by about 59,999 and a dog! Its been another fantastic experience, plus we didn't know this until the end but the Korean guys we played with actually pay $50 to hire the pitch (imagine doing that at wembley...oh hang on its not finished!!!) we offered them some money as we felt bad about gatecrashing their game but they weren't having any of it, plus they gave us a bottle of water each at half time. Great guys who probably didn't realise how much it meant to us to play on the ground. Thanks.
Where now for me? Play at Anfield? Thats only 45,000!!! Jog on Stevie G!
